Drethem Schalenstein

Drethem Schalenstein submitted by Martin_L on 14th Mar 2012. Remarkable cup-marked erratic. Viewed from the East. It is not in situ though. March 2012

Log Text: The stone is not situ. The cup-marks mainly face to the east. Due to this and the tree growth situation there has been no time of day where sunlight would enhance the visibility of the carvings.

Log Text: Tre ortostater og en dekkstein er til stede. Sikkert må i det minste en form for passasje ha blitt borte. Ensemblet er veldig imponerende. Rår høyt i et felt.

Three orthostats and one capstone are present. For sure at least some sort of passage must have gone missing. The ensemble is very impressive. Towering high in a field. As of summer 2022 the farmer kindly left an access path.

Log Text: Very nice ambience during visits in July 2022 when it stood in a freshly harvested field. Access may be difficult during times when the field is not harvested though the path is leading along the site in only about 10m distance so it will be at least visible from there.

La Vacherie Dolmen

Date Added: 2nd Aug 2022
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Pays de la Loire:Maine-et-Loire 49)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jul 2022. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 4

La Vacherie dolmen

La Vacherie dolmen submitted by theCaptain on 16th Jul 2014. This is a nice little site, and easy to find to the south of Distré, as it is signposted. The dolmen is in a little woodland clearing in a marshy area, which makes it nice and green and shady on this hot afternoon.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Impressive dolmen with porticus. The chamber is halfways exposed and covered by a single capstone measuring approx. 4,3 by 3,2m. The porticus is collapsed (seen in the foreground). Due to its low position in the terrain, the dolmen usually takes a bath in winter time. Possibly this is the reason why the whole structure is somewhat tilted.
The site has a lovely ambience in summer, but due to the wet surroundings various blood sucking insects sometimes show up within in a very short period of time.

Senlis Alignement submitted by Martin_L on 5th Sep 2019. The Menhirs des Indrolles in July 2019. Other possible menhirs are lying nearby. Situated in muddy woodland. The forest's ground looked heavily affected by either forestry works or other human ativities. Nevertheless the ambiance has been quite good. No signpost nor an information panel.

Rickelmann Hügelgrab 2

Rickelmann Hügelgrab 2 submitted by Martin_L on 3rd Sep 2019. Internal stones of an excavated round barrow. These stones have been found as internal structures of a round barrow which has been excavated in the proximity. So it is quite a rare possibilty to study such a structure. As far as i recall it originates from Besten (Eggermühlen), but i am not sure and cannot find a reference at the moment. There used to be an information table stating details, but it was gone in 2019.

Log Text: Rare chance to see the internal stones of a round barrow. They have been moved here after excavation of a nearby barrow.

Viererstein

Viererstein submitted by Martin_L on 20th Aug 2019. May 2019, Viererstein photographed using a 1940s Pseudo-TLR and Agfa ISU film from a 1973 expired batch showing some. The photo shows the Western (foreground left) and the Southern stone (tilted, partly overgrown). The site has been quite overgrown in May 2019. The ambiance is heavily spoilt by a road and a dirt road running just along the site. Hence i tried to give it some more timeless appearance by using the equipment mentioned above. Albsheim Menhir

Albsheim Menhir submitted by Martin_L on 8th Aug 2019. August 2019. Polaroid showing the re-erected, but damaged neolithic menhir. It has been found during roadworks in 1982 and the larger fragment has been re-erected in 1986. The smaller part is presented just beside it in the same concrete foundation. Prehistorian Otto Gödel reported in Mitteilungen des Historischen Vereins der Pfalz Bd. 96. Log Text: The stone itself is interesting, though the proximity of the road and quite ugly base used to set it up do not add to the ambience. The surrounding landscape is pleasant in general.

Hinkelstein von Gumbsheim submitted by Martin_L on 6th Aug 2019. Gumbsheim Menhir in August 2019. Showing the beautiful standing stone in its new environment. Not a very good ambiance, but at least it hopefully is safe now.

Log Text: Very nice menhir. After it got knocked over it has been set up at a slightly different location in a rather non-desirable way. At least it survived, but the ambience is definitely is not good although the surrounding rural landscape is quite beautiful.

Dolmen de Men-Milliget

Dolmen de Men-Milliget submitted by Martin_L on 28th Jun 2022. The dolmen seen roughly from the East. The stone foreground left probably is a passage capstone. The chamber is mainly below level of the surrounding ground and halfways filled with earth/sand. Quite an impressive site. The large chamber capstone shows some interesting erosion and the chamber orthostats are nicely shaped. June 2022

Log Text: Short walk from the minor road. In 2022 there has been a small sign. The Chapelle St Gonvel is nearby and deserves a visit too.

Dolmen de la Pagerie

Dolmen de la Pagerie submitted by Martin_L on 13th Jul 2022. Landscape context of the Pierre Couverte de la Pagerie. Seen from the East in July 2022. In the Inventaire des mégalithes de la France Dr. Michel Gruet writes "[...] enorme monument [...]" and one cannot agree more. The clear size of the chamber is 10,65m by 5m. As one support in the SE is obviously missing the SE part is partly collapsed. Nevertheless this site is incredibly impressive.
