Visited: Yes on 13th Feb 2010

Foreground showing remaining kerbstones of the oval enclosure (25 x 8m) and a fragment of a capstone blown to pieces by explosives. While most chamber orthostats are preserved, only 4 chamber capstones remained undestroyed (C1,C2,C3 and C9). Sprockhoff et al. identified fragments of 4 other capstones (C7, C8, C10, C11). C4, C5 and the central entrance capstone C6 are completely missing. April 2009

Log Text: Due to visits by school classes we had to wait for nearly 4 hours until we could visit, but of course it was worth it. One of the most stunning prehistoric sites I have ever been to. The paintings are of outstanding artistic quality and very well preserved.
Grotte de Pech-Merle
Date Added: 25th Nov 2010
Site Type: Cave or Rock Shelter
Country: France (Midi:Lot (46))
Visited: Yes

Grotte de Pech-Merle submitted by thecaptain on 14th Nov 2008. The entrance area to this fantastic cave, which I would thoroughly encourage anybody to visit.
One of the oak trees here (with the white paint) has one of its roots hanging down into the cave, which can be seen looking like a hairy stalactite.

Visited: Yes on 3rd Sep 2009

Gundestrup Mark Jættestue 2 submitted by Martin_L on 3rd Sep 2009. April 1990.
P1 + P2: Two approximately 6m long passages (P1 and P2) (nowadays hardly visible) lead into a 12m long chamber, covered by at least 10 capstones.
Most probably this main chamber was/is internally divided into two similar sized parts (C1+C2).
The chamber is deeply embedded into remains of the eroded barrow and completely filled with earth. Only the capstones are easily visible.
S1 + S2: Aligned with both passages there are two side chambers at the opposite side of the ma...

Hammah Steingrab 1
Date Added: 17th Sep 2010
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen)
Visited: Yes on 15th Jun 2010

Hammah Steingrab 1 submitted by Martin_L on 15th Jun 2010. Aerial view from the South-west. The barrow containing the chamber was overgrown by moorland like several other sites in this area and first discovered in the early 20th century. Hence the site survived the 19th century when approximately 90% of the megalithic monuments where completely destroyed. The tomb was excavated by K.H. Jacob-(Friesen). According to his research the chamber measures 6m by 3,5m (clear: 4,5m by 1,5m -2m). The stone marked “E” in this picture probably was the entranc...

Hammah Steingrab 2

Site Type: Passage Grave
Country: Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen)
Visited: Yes on 15th Jun 2010

Hammah Steingrab 2 submitted by Martin_L on 15th Jun 2010. The site viewed from the NE. The capstones are robbed except for one fragment damaged by blasting attempts. Otherwise this certainly is one of the best preserved chambers among the several hundred megalithic sites known in Lower-Saxony. Clear size of the approx E-W oriented chamber is 6m by 1,5m. It is situated inside significant remains of the earthwork, a nearly round barrow (diameter 20m). The ambience is magnificent except for plenty of ticks and mosquitos in spring and summer.
