Date Added: 22nd Feb 2011
Site Type: Long Barrow
Country: Germany (Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg)
Visited: Yes on 6th Jan 2011

Hemmelmark Steingrab (1) submitted by Martin_L on 6th Jan 2011. View along the chambered and kerbed long-barrow.
It is oriented NW-SE. The length was at least 22m. Width is approx. 6m.
Most of the kerbstones especially in the NW most probably are robbed. Some remained, but are largely covered and/or fallen as the earthwork is heavily eroded. Furthermore some stones from field clearance were obviously placed on top and beside the long-barrow.
In contrast the parallel oriented chamber near barrows centre is very well preserved and still partly embedde...

Meyer Grosssteingrab submitted by Martin_L on 1st Feb 2011. The remains of the appr. 26m long chamber viewed from the SW (April 2008)
What once was the second largest chambered tomb of the Necropolis at Westerholte suffered severe damages in the first half of the 19th century when it was abused as a quarry. According to the detailed sketch of Wächter [1] the NE-SW oriented chamber originally had 16 capstones and a length of appr. 26m. When J.H. Müller [2] visited the site in 1864 only 4 orthostats in situ, a fragment of an orthostat and 4 part...
