Kerloas Menhir

Date Added: 20th Jan 2022
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: France (Bretagne:Finistère (29))
Visited: Would like to visit

Kerloas menhir

Kerloas menhir submitted by thecaptain on 23rd Jun 2006. This is the biggest standing menhir in Europe, if not the world, at nearly 10 metres tall, and has lost the top 2 metres after a lightning strike! The stone, which is not local and has been brought to this hilltop site from more than 2.5 kilometres away, has been beautifully shaped, and tapers both into the ground, and up to a point.

Kermario Dolmen

Kermario Dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 18th Oct 2004. Kermario Dolmen, north of Carnac, Brittany. View of the Kermario Dolmen which is right at the southwest corner of the Kermario Alignements, and right in the corner of the road which skirts the site. This picture was taken in 1987 when people were free to wander amongst the stones as they pleased. The terrible erosion caused by all the visitors is only too obvious.

Kirchborchen Steinkiste (1)

Kirchborchen Steinkiste (1) submitted by Martin_L on 15th Feb 2013. Detail of gallery graves' central part. The main part of the 21m by 3m chamber is situated below ground level. While most orthostats are preserved only one capstone survived historic destruction. It is partly fallen and as an unnecesary act of official vandalism a "monument" sign has been attached (with screws...) to it. January 2013

Klein Berssen Steingrab 2 'Berssener Stein'

Klein Berssen Steingrab 2 'Berssener Stein' submitted by Martin_L on 11th Jan 2011. Klein Berßen Grab II, also known as "Berßener Stein" or Sprockhoff 854. Pole aerial view from the West. The remains of this partly exposed trapezoidal chamber measure 12m by 4,5m (clear length 10m). The western end stone is missing, so the chamber possibly was longer. Preserved are 6 pairs of longside-ortostats, the eastern chamber end orthostat, two fallen capstones (assuming the chamber was not longer than today these are C2 and C3 counting from the West) and fragments of further capstones...
