Hammah Steingrab 1
Date Added: 17th Sep 2010
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen)
Visited: Yes on 15th Jun 2010

Hammah Steingrab 1 submitted by Martin_L on 15th Jun 2010. Aerial view from the South-west. The barrow containing the chamber was overgrown by moorland like several other sites in this area and first discovered in the early 20th century. Hence the site survived the 19th century when approximately 90% of the megalithic monuments where completely destroyed. The tomb was excavated by K.H. Jacob-(Friesen). According to his research the chamber measures 6m by 3,5m (clear: 4,5m by 1,5m -2m). The stone marked “E” in this picture probably was the entranc...

Hammah Steingrab 2
Date Added: 17th Sep 2010
Site Type: Passage Grave
Country: Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen)
Visited: Yes on 15th Jun 2010

Hammah Steingrab 2 submitted by Martin_L on 15th Jun 2010. The site viewed from the NE. The capstones are robbed except for one fragment damaged by blasting attempts. Otherwise this certainly is one of the best preserved chambers among the several hundred megalithic sites known in Lower-Saxony. Clear size of the approx E-W oriented chamber is 6m by 1,5m. It is situated inside significant remains of the earthwork, a nearly round barrow (diameter 20m). The ambience is magnificent except for plenty of ticks and mosquitos in spring and summer.

Site Type: Long Barrow
Country: Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen)
Visited: Yes on 15th Jun 2010

Ohrensen Steingrab submitted by Martin_L on 15th Jun 2010. Looking along the southern long-side (from a height of approx. 6m). The two “x” mark the ends of the remains of this large chambered and kerbed long-barrow measuring 48m by 7m . The chamber was located near the centre (marked with “C”).
To get an impression how the site originally looked compare with similar sites in Germany and Denmark in better condition. For example: Kleinenkneter Steine , Karlsminde , Grønsalen
While the earthwork of the western part is comparatively well pr...

Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen)
Visited: Yes on 20th Jun 2010

Oldendorf Steingrab 2 submitted by Martin_L on 20th Jun 2010. Aerial view of the chamber showing its groundplan. "E" is marking the entrance. A low entrance stone is preserved, but covered. The capstones (probably 3) as well as three orthostats are robbed. More unusually the narrow side in the NE is built of two orthostats instead of one. The dry-walling, that originally filled in the gaps between the orthostats was partly restored. June 2010

Site Type: Passage Grave
Country: Netherlands (Drenthe)
Visited: Yes on 25th Jun 2010

D30 Exloo submitted by Martin_L on 25th Jun 2010. The 4-capstone passage grave viewed from the East.
Chamber length 7,3m (clear 6m)
Width varies from 3m to 3,4m (clear 2m)
The chamber is deeply embedded into the sandy ground. All orthostats were (and still are) preserved in situ when van Giffen examined the site in the early 20th century. Capstones C1 (counting from the North) and C2 were robbed, C3 was fallen and C4 in situ. Obviously C3 was placed back on its orthostats and C2 probably was replaced. The passage has preserved one pair...

Site Type: Passage Grave
Country: Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen)
Visited: Yes on 29th Jun 2010

Emsen Ganggrab submitted by Martin_L on 29th Jun 2010. Oblique aerial of the 55m chambered and kerbed long-barrow. View towards SW. The width is up to 8m and largest in the SW. Hence Sprockhoff et al. assumed a slightly trapezoid shape. Except for one kerb-stone (overgrown, but marked with an "x" in this photo) and some fragments all megaliths supporting the nowadays eroded earthwork are robbed, but hollows and ditches are left from the extraction (probably in the early 19th century, when most megalithic tombs were abused as quarries). The chamber...

D46 Angelslo submitted by Martin_L on 9th Aug 2010. Oblique aerial from the West. When Prof. van Giffen examined this massive 9,5m x 3,5m chamber in the early 20th century the orthostats were still in situ except for N2, but the capstones were scattered around. One capstone is missing and one is only partly preserved (now used as C1). C2 shows tool-marks from historic destruction attempts. Van Giffen assumed the entrance between orthostats S3 and S4. The position is marked "E". No traces left of a possible passage or an enclosure.
