Dragon Hill

Dragon Hill submitted by nicoladidsbury on 15th Sep 2008. Dragon Hill from the Uffington White Horse An incredible complex of monuments. Dragon Hill was amazing, the wind was roaring over from the East, if felt like the dragon was roaring in my ears! The photo was taken from the white horse, which can be seen in the foreground.

Wayland's Smithy

Wayland's Smithy submitted by nicoladidsbury on 15th Sep 2008. Waylands Smithy - tomb entrance I have wanted to visit this site for a long time. A very peaceful, wowful, place. The walk from Uffington Castle and the white horse, along the ridgeway was beautiful too. This site was used in Manda Scott's "Crystal Skull", and was brilliantly described, making me want to visit the site even more...

High Ireby Standing Stone

High Ireby Standing Stone submitted by nicoladidsbury on 18th Oct 2008. High Ireby Standing Stone I spotted this stone close to my parents farm, and am wondering if it could be a standing stone. There are possibly two? more further down the field, and made me wonder if it was a stone row. Photo taken on full zoom.

Gosforth Cross

Gosforth Cross submitted by nicoladidsbury on 30th Aug 2006. Gosforth Norse Cross Driving northwards towards Gosforth I saw a magnificent rainbow in the east, lighting up the fells with wonderful colour. I prayed, please last until I get to Gosforth! I parked, jumped out of the car, ran across the graveyard (trying not to be disrespectful) and managed to get two shots of the fading rainbow. 60 seconds later I would have been too late!

Log Text: Escaping from the horrendous weather during a weekend in Wasdale, we took shelter in the Church and played with side lighting to perfect the pictures of the Hogbacks and the Fisher Stone. This is such a marvellous place, so full of ancient Viking carvings. It never fails to stir me, to make me think about the ancestors of Cumbria.
One stone is called the Warrior Stone, and shows two Viking armies on one side, and the serpents on the other. The ends are possibly bears, and the roof may depict shingles. the other hogback is the Saints Stone, this one has a image of Jesus on the cross at the ends, and some fantstic carvings on the sides. The style is very reminisent of the Cross at Adlington, Penrith and Dacre.
