Auchencar submitted by nicoladidsbury on 2nd Sep 2004. Standing Stone at Auchencar, Isle of Arran
Grid Ref:891364
Red sandstone Standing stone 5m high, covered in lichens, with views over Machrie Bay. The stone is very thin.
This stone is similar to the red sandstone circles found at machrie moor.
Aubrey Burl identifies a possible source for these stones at Auchencar, which is 5 km to the north of machrie moor. If this is the site of the quarry for the machrie moor stones, was this particular stone some sort of marker.

Palaggiu Alignement submitted by nicoladidsbury on 3rd Sep 2004. Alignements de Palaggiu
The alignments stretch across the countyside like a battleground of soldiers. The site is close to the sea and there is a theory that the statues were some sort of magical deterrent to invaders.

Kintraw (Kilmartin) submitted by nicoladidsbury on 14th Sep 2004. A 4m high standing stone.
This standing stone had been leaning, and finally fell over after a severe winter 1979. An excavation of the socket of the fallen stone was carried out. This showed that one metre of the total length of 5.25 metres had been set into the socket and jammed with several packing stones.

Bewcastle Cross submitted by nicoladidsbury on 20th Sep 2004. Bewcastle Cross, Cumbria
Image shows the detail from the north and east sides of the 15m cross. These sides are very well preserved.
The north side is divided into five compartments. In the highest and lowest are vines running in graceful curves and bearing foliage and fruit. "In the second and fourth divisions are two curiously-devised and intricately-twisted knots." The third division is filled with the chequer work. Between the compartments are lines of Runes which are now so indi...

This photo was taken on New Year's Eve. Remarkable sunlight filtered through wispy low cloud, lighting the stones, and Blencathra beyond. I liked the way the stones are reflected in the pool of water, giving a slightly different twist to the view I love so much!

Four Stones Hill Standing Stones submitted by nicoladidsbury on 11th Jan 2005. Standing Stones at Four Stones Hill near Haweswater
Two stones remain, just below the summit of Four Stones Hill.
One of the stones is leaning towards its neighbour, and looks like it may fall.
There are excellent views from the stones down to the reservoir, and over to the magnificent fells of high street and Kidsy Pike.
A great place to go for a walk, but I didn't feel any special ambience there, I rather thought the stones looked like two gate posts.
Perhaps I should revisit witho...

Hazel Moor Enclosure submitted by nicoladidsbury on 21st Jan 2005. Hazel Moor Enclosure
A difficult site to photograph.
Kings Well lies in the fold of land just below the stone wall, where the wall turns to the left.
Rising up from this point and going between the two trees, is a very large earth bank, up to five feet high in places. This bank leads up to the plateau of Hazel Moor, which is enclosed with further banks.
There also appears to be a bank to the left hand side of the photo
