Waberthwaite Cross submitted by nicoladidsbury on 27th Apr 2005. Ancient Anglian/Scandinavian Stone Cross at St John's Church, Waberthwaite. East panel, unfortunately in shadow, view looking over to the Estuary of the river Esk.
This tiny church nestles by the tidal estuary of the river Esk, tucked away in a remote and tranquil corner of Cumbria. The church is looking rather forlorn, its doors battened over with strips of wood, but the churchyard is quite idillic in an unassumping, unkempt way.
The Cross Shaft is 2m high, and quite badly weathered, ma...

Site Type: Ancient Cross
Country: England (Cumbria)
Visited: Yes on 22nd May 2005

Dacre Church submitted by nicoladidsbury on 22nd May 2005. St Andrew's Church - 9th Century Cross Fragment.
This is the smaller fragment, which is believed to date from the 9th century, was found in 1900 close to the Church and deep in clay. It is considerably damaged but some detail of the carving is still quite sharp. The least damaged face of the shaft, where the top has been broken off, shows two pairs of human feet. Beneath is a lion-like winged creature, with a large face and sorrowful eyes, with the head and part of the body of a serpent.

Castle Ring (Derbyshire) submitted by nicoladidsbury on 5th Jul 2005. View up to Castle Ring Hillfort from the Limestone Way path near Youlgreave. Its possible to make out the turf banks, topped with a drystone wall. The hill is very steep sided, giving a very well defended site. The Limestone Way path continues up the side of the hill underneath Castle Ring, although there is no access to the fort as it is on private land.
