Pen-y-Gaer (Conwy) submitted by pab on 27th Sep 2008. Site in Conwy (Bwrdeistref Sirol) Wales: Pen-y-Gaer from due west. While on an opportunistic drive up unmarked lanes above Llanbedr-y-cennin this week, I noticed and photographed the fine profile which (from the Portal!) I subsequently found out was Pen-y-Gaer. This shot was taken from the slopes 0.6km due west.

Drygarn Fawr
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Cairn
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 19th Oct 2008

Drygarn Fawr submitted by pab on 19th Oct 2008. Quartz topping to the eastern cairn.
Visible for miles when the sun is on it - beautiful place, but the warnings by kiri and others about boggy ground are certainly justified.

Llanddowror Standing stone submitted by pab on 3rd Nov 2008. Slender and modest standing stone which is on the flood-plain of the river Taf near St Clears (not to be confused with the slightly larger river Taff running through Cardiff!).

Gors Fawr Stone Circle
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Wales (Pembrokeshire)
Visited: Yes on 11th Jan 2009

Gors Fawr Stone Circle submitted by pab on 11th Jan 2009. Gors Fawr, frozen in time!
Normally very boggy (as its name means in Welsh), the current cold spell has made even the mud walkable on!
This picture, taken 10 Jan 09, reminded me of mountainman's recent comments (in a forum near you!) about moving stones from here to Stonehenge over the ice & snow.
It may not have worked over grass a couple of years ago, but given a run of harsh winters, I can see it being a different prospect.

Country: Wales (Carmarthenshire)
Visited: Yes on 31st Jan 2009

Llandawke Inscribed Stone submitted by pab on 31st Jan 2009. Side view of the Ogham and Latin script.
Mary Curtis' book contains some very clear sketches of both scripts...well worth looking out for a copy of her work, which was produced as a facsimile by the former Dyyed County Council.

Mynydd Rhiw Neolithic axe factory
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Ancient Mine, Quarry or other Industry
Country: Wales (Gwynedd)
Visited: Yes on 8th Feb 2009

Mynydd Rhiw Neolithic axe factory submitted by pab on 8th Feb 2009. Neolithic axe factory on Mynydd Rhiw, Lleyn Peninsular. The disturbed ground is from the 2007 excavations referred to elsewhere in these postings - having left it till now to post, I assume they will no longer show on the ground.
The picture is taken looking north-east, so both Caernarfon Bay and Cardigan Bay can be seen - with Yr Eifi and its magnificent iron age settlement visible on the skyline leading towards Snowdonia.

Rhos y Clegyrn
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Wales (Pembrokeshire)
Visited: Yes on 2nd Mar 2009

Rhos y Clegyrn submitted by pab on 2nd Mar 2009. This stone stands proudly at 2.7m high. Part of its impact may be the fact that you can see so much of its surface from each angle - it seems more 'triangular with blunt edges' rather than rectangular, if that makes sense!?
A kites-eye view would help - if only...!

Ffyst Samson
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Wales (Pembrokeshire)
Visited: Yes on 2nd Mar 2009

Ffyst Samson submitted by pab on 2nd Mar 2009. Looking under Ffyst Samson out towards the Irish Sea. This photo shows just how massive the capstone is. Combined with there being only 2 uprights with very limited contact with the capstone they support, the whole thing manages to look very strange!

Cors y Gedol

Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Wales (Gwynedd)
Visited: Yes on 7th Mar 2009

Cors y Gedol submitted by pab on 7th Mar 2009. The capstone looks fairly slender from the path - this picture shows it is not exactly small though! COFLEIN gives the dimensions as "c.3.6m by 3.0m & 0.45m thick".
COFLEIN also has an aerial photo of the site, which nicely shows the extent of the original cairn.

Tafarn-y-Bwlch submitted by pab on 10th Apr 2009. View between Talfarn y Bwlch stone pair. This photo, taken Good Friday 2009, shows (I'm fairly sure) Garn Farw on the horizon, bearing 282, and 11.9 miles away.
It really can be that clear in Wales, but please don't tell anyone!
