Bryn Cader Faner
Date Added: 7th Jun 2012
Site Type: Ring Cairn
Country: Wales (Gwynedd)
Visited: Yes on 20th Apr 2012

Bryn Cader Faner submitted by pab on 20th Apr 2012. Beautiful place...the access wasn't as difficult as I'd expected, so I think the it is only fair to acknowledge the improvements made to the paths.
Difficult balance between improving access and keeping it remote & special....
I was a bit reluctant to add to the the amazing images already posted for this site, but this sky tempted me enough to do so!

St Baglan's Church (Llanfaglan)

St Baglan's Church (Llanfaglan) submitted by pab on 19th Apr 2012. St Baglan's Church
A short walk across the fields from the coastal road, the ancient church of St Baglan's is not normally open - but the Friends of Friendless Churches charity does make sure it opens a couple of times a year and is cared for as well as possible.
Even if it is not open, it should be possible to see one of its treasures in the porch, in the form of this fascinating early carved stone.

Nordland Museum, Bodø submitted by PAB on 4th Mar 2012. Collection of Silver items from the Viking Age on display in Nordland Museum, Bodø.
This is described in the museum's brochure as being one of the biggest treasures from the Viking Age found in Northern Norway.
It was found by chance in 1919, hidden in a scree and wrapped in birch bark. The coins / money are a mixture of both Anglo-Saxon (5) and Arabic (47) origin.

Stonehenge Aotearoa
Date Added: 7th Jun 2012
Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc
Country: New Zealand
Visited: Yes on 25th Nov 2011. My rating: Ambience 4 Access 5

Stonehenge Aotearoa submitted by pab on 7th Jun 2012. November 2011
This is the 'Avenue' entrance to the main circle, with my 5ft marker (aka Mrs PAB) standing at the entrance for scale.
There is plenty of information about the purpose and layout - but basically the various monoliths are markers of the limits of events such as the solstice or equinox. It is definitely worth visiting the website to understand the location more fully.

Callanish I submitted by pab on 19th Oct 2011. Although nearby Callanish II and III can be seen fairly well from the main site, it isn't very easy to appreciate that from photos - so hopefully this composite will help those who have not (yet) been able to get to this glorious place.

Log Text: To help us enjoy both an evening visit and be close enough to just walk up for a dawn attempt at the sunrise/moonset double, we used the Camping & Caravan site just at the foot of Maiden Castle itself.
This meant a fairly easy & short walk up to the western entrance - what a delight to have somewhere to leave the campervan & just walk up to such a magnificent location..
For information, the sunrise was about 7.30, with the moon not setting until just after 9am - not often you can catch 2 such lovely times with such a short interval between them. Checking the great Photographers Ephemeris website helps to make me decide whether it might be worth putting an early alarm on - highly recommend it as a source of timing information..
Pobull Fhinn
Date Added: 9th Feb 2012
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Scotland (North Uist)
Visited: Yes on 27th Sep 2011

Pobull Fhinn submitted by pab on 27th Sep 2011. Built on a artificial platform, leveling, this oval 'circle' is described in early RCAHms reports as being 122ft E-W and 100ft N-S.
The reports state that there are 23 or 24 stones in total, but the amount of heather/bracken at the time of our visit meant that only the larger ones were visible.
