Virtuous Well
Date Added: 24th May 2015
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: Wales (Monmouthshire)
Visited: Would like to visit

Virtuous Well submitted by Thorgrim on 20th Jan 2004. The Virtuous Well was formerly known as St Anne's Well. Situated in Trellech at SO503051, the well is one of nine that were once here. Each was reputed to cure a different malady. You should drop a pebble into the well and make a wish. If many bubbles appear, then your wish will be granted, if only a few then you will be disappointed.

Kermario alignements submitted by pab on 23rd Dec 2014. There is such a vast variation in size and shape - this seemed to have a different 'texture' - unfortunately I didn't manage to get the overall formation in my head so cannot say which of the rows or sections this one is.

Machu Picchu. submitted by PAB on 5th Nov 2013. Machu Picchu, Peru
As if the main vista of Machu Picchu wasn't amazing enough, there were even more structures on the top of Waynapicchu, the mountain overlooking Machu Picchu itself.
This photo shows some of these structures - only a couple of hundred people are allowed to climb up, one group at 7.30, another at 10.30.

Moray Terraces submitted by pab on 7th Nov 2013. Moray craters, Peru.
This series of craters was a delight. On the plateau above the Urubamba river valley, there is a series of 4 terraced craters which have been shown to have pre-Inca beginnings.
They are up to half a mile across, and over a hundred feet deep in places.
What is really fascinating is the fact that, because of their depth and orientation, there can be a temperature difference of 15 °C (27 °F) between the bottom of the craters and the tops!
The craters may have ...

This photo is of the information panel at the entrance to this wonderful site, just outside the city of Cusco.
It gives a useful overview of the huge site, probably the most significant Inca site apart from Machu Picchu.
As noted by the National Geographic
in its list of the Top 10 locations in Peru, "....Arguably the greatest Inca ruin outside of Machu Picchu, this gargantuan complex overlooks the city of Cusco. ... Sacsahuaman is believed to have once been ...

The information plaque reads:
“NASCA Classic Period 1 – 800 A.A.
Feminine figurines were quite common among ancient peoples. They constitute objects of ritual and propitiatory character, as well as high symbolic value. Also noteworthy is their individual beauty resulting from the primitive design and Simplici...

In any other setting, and without the noise and smells, this would be a delight. Hopefully we just visited at a bad time, and in a few years things will be far better - so please don't give up on this place!

Attached is one I took when taking secondary school pupils from my Swindon school on a holiday to South Wales. I'm not sure of the exact date but I would say it is between 1979 and 1986."
