Silbury Hill

Silbury Hill submitted by pab on 2nd Apr 2011. Silbury Hill, from the path up to West Kennet Long Barrow. The dark sky delivered what it promised - hail stones by the time we got to West Kennet. All this really needed was a rainbow.... Photo taken 28 August 2009

Craig Rhosyfelin

Craig Rhosyfelin submitted by PAB on 27th Feb 2011. Runemage commented that a map might be useful to help people understand what the 'new' discovery means, so I popped up there at lunchtime to try and get a picture to show the connections. This is one of our favourite spots for Sunday lunch, so no great hardship! The Carn Meini outcrop is to the left of this shot - which is basically looking along the northern flank of the Preseli Hills towards Carn Ingli and the coast at Newport. It is certainly true that no-one would take any ston...

Althing submitted by pab on 2nd Jan 2011. Site in Iceland By way of contrast to Drew's photo from April 2010, this picture is of the same location, but looking at the Rock and flag from the other direction. This was taken in July 2002, when Iceland was really in bloom with wild flowers. The Icelanders have a very keen pride in having had their democratic 'parliament' since such an early period.

Troy Town Maze submitted by pab on 26th Oct 2010. Troy Town Maze: showing the extent of erosion in June 2009. This is the view looking west, with Bishop Rock Lighthouse visible top left, about 4 miles away. In such as exposed location, it must be very difficult for the soil and turf to recover from the damage caused by visitors tracing the curves. Photo: 21 June 2009

Carreg Bica Cairn

Carreg Bica Cairn submitted by PAB on 5th Oct 2010. Carreg Bica - general view, looking southeast. The shape of the barrow is clear and striking, providing excellent panoramic views. The stone cairn is clearly a fairly 'modern' construct - and the marker is one of the boundary markers which go right round the Elan Valley Estate - about 65 miles apparently.

Cwmyffynnon alignment

Cwmyffynnon alignment submitted by PAB on 3rd Oct 2010. On the slopes above the road between Lyn Nantlle and Ryd Ddu, there is a clear alignment. This may well be 'natural' but it is and almost certainly was formerly very significant. As for special - no doubt... This photo is taken along a bearing of 042 - towards the many settlements and cairns on the Carneddau.

Ty'n Y Pant Stone submitted by pab on 7th Aug 2011. Ty'n Y Pant Stone. The dragonfly is of course one of the oldest surviving creatures, so it seemed only right for us to wait until he had soaked up some sunshine. He obviously thinks Ty'n Y Pant Stone is worthy of close inspection...anyone know otherwise?

Caerau Gaer-1 submitted by pab on 25th Apr 2010. Caerau Gaer hillfort, this hidden gem commands wonderful views south over the valley, whilst its close neighbour (Llanddewi Gaer) looks north towards the Precelli Hills. The lanes linking the two hilltops have the incomparable feel of ancient trackways....with a fox happily wandering along ahead of me!

Syracuse Archaeological Park submitted by pab on 19th Apr 2010. Inside the cave! The surface of the cave showed the lines of workings, so it isn't a natural cave, but one formed by quarrying. The photo doesn't really show it, but the guide talked us through the progressive layers into the seam the slaves were quarrying.

Ephesus submitted by pab on 27th Feb 2010. Ephesus: Terraced Houses. Close to the magnificent Library frontage, there is a covered area for which an additional charge is payable. There are real delights waiting for you inside - these are not terraced houses as those of us who were brought up in British cities may think of them - they are houses built up in terraces up the slope! From humble shops at street level to villas higher up the slope, you are able to watch craftsmen at work restoring the marble panels, and meander thr...
