Carn Euny Fogou
Date Added: 20th Nov 2013
Site Type: Souterrain (Fogou, Earth House)
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Would like to visit

Carn Euny Fogou submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jan 2005. This shot shows the huge but low (4.5ft - 1.4m) SE-facing doorway of the Carn Euny 'Beehive Hut' underground chamber, with its own short passage leading into the fogou passage which runs SW/NE, (but snaking here with a flatter, more W/E run), just outside the doorway. It is thought that the Beehive Hut (chamber) was the first structure on this site, so that originally the eastern wall of the fogou passage would not have obstructed the view. It is possible that the sun was meant to shine down t...

Boskednan stone circle submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The portal stones illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun. The tallest one (on the left) has a diagonal groove present on this and the opposite side. The holes that the restored stones were raised from have been covered with pegged down foliage, presumably to encourage regrowth on the bare earth.

St Mawnan's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 4th Sep 2006. St Mawnan’s Well is dedicated to St Mawnan, a Celtic saint.
From Mawnan village follow the signs for about 1 mile to the Mawnan Old Parish Church which is situated on the clifftop 4 miles southwest of Falmouth Bay. The church dates from the 13th century.
The well is on private land in the garden of The Rectory. A gate guards steep steps down to a sunken path leading to the well. St Mawnan’s Well is still blessed with fresh, clear water and the ambiance is magical. The well has bee...

Raqchi submitted by pab on 3rd Nov 2013. Temple of Viracocha, the Creator god.
This was once a major centre on Inca civilisation and religion.
This photo shows the main ancient temple wall, the lower parts being typical Inca cut and fitted masonry, while the upper section is made of adobe.
The roof tiles are a modern addition, to protect the adobe from rain and erosion.

Cat Hole Cave
Date Added: 21st Oct 2013
Site Type: Cave or Rock Shelter
Country: Wales (West Glamorgan)
Visited: Yes on 29th Jan 2013

Cat Hole Cave submitted by pab on 29th Jan 2013. Cat Hole Cave interior. As access seems no longer possible, I thought people might like to see some photos from inside the cave.
This shows one of the recesses at the back of the cave - there were many niches like this, most being very narrow.
We didn't have particularly good lighting, so couldn't investigate properly. Seeing the cave definitely helped me understand the description of how the art was found, and how it might have been missed for so long too.

Hardings Down West
Date Added: 21st Oct 2013
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: Wales (West Glamorgan)
Visited: Yes on 5th Jul 2013

Hardings Down West submitted by pab on 5th Jul 2013. The south-westerly edge of Hardings Down West, with sem providing both scale and perspective....
This hillfort is very deceptive - from the lane it looks fairly impressive, but its sheer scale is only appreciated when you reach the ramparts.
If you really can't enjoy this delightful location during the Portal event arranged as part of the Festival of Archaeology, follow the COFLEIN link on the site page to see a very impressive aerial image.
