Holy Well (Biddestone)

Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Would like to visit
Holy Well (Biddestone) submitted by KiwiBetsy on 13th Sep 2006. The Starwell is quite a large spring that flows from a slope and into a small stream. If you are lucky you may find one of the tiny star shaped fossils (crinoids) which give the spring one of it’s names. These fossils are freed from the underlying rock by the water, carried to the surface and deposited in the silty bed of the spring. We spent some time sifting about in the icy water (closely watched by a herd of curious cows) but found only a few modern coins, no doubt left by previous visi...

Stall Moor circle submitted by thecaptain on 14th Aug 2006. Kiss-in-the-Ring stone circle.
Seen here looking to the south, from the end of the longest known prehistoric stone row in the World.
The most magnificent Dartmoor stone row can be seen from here (in reality, if not this picture), running over the top of Stalldown Barrow hill in the distance of this picture.

Maengwyngweddew submitted by TimPrevett on 15th Aug 2005. Have you ever tried looking for a squat white standing stone, about 85cm tall, with uncertain directions, and a mountainside of sheep? Not easy. This took me two attempts. An aborted attempt on my birthday left me disappointed and frustrated, wishing I'd purchased the 1:25000, and not the 1:50000. Sob sob.
Thankfully, my family had pity upon me, and I returned a couple days later with new attitude and closer studying of the 1:50000 and guide book. This fresh approach helped me find this quartz...

Hambledon Hill hillfort submitted by JimChampion on 10th Jan 2005. December 2002. Looking towards the south at the impressive west-facing flank of Hambledon hill. The ramparts are clearly visible in this picture, and the grazing sheep give a sense of scale. The ramparts in the foreground drop away sharply - presumably as the result of a landslip.

Caer Caradoc (Church Stretton) submitted by TimPrevett on 28th Jun 2004. Caer Caradoc, taken from a northwest angle on a lovely summer's morning. Indeed, this offers some formidable defense. If this were the place of Caratacus' last stand against the Romans, this would have indeed been something difficult to conquer, even by Roman standards. However, there is no evidence to confirm this suggestion.

Stalldon Row

Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Would like to visit
Stalldon Row submitted by thecaptain on 22nd Sep 2006. The northern end of the row has 4 wonderful large (2 metres plus) stones still standing, which can be seen from miles away all over the southern moor, and look in many ways like walkers on the hilltop.
Seen here looking to the north, the wild moorland stretches off into the distance.

St Breward's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 6th Oct 2006. This well was thought to cure sore eyes and it was customary to leave a pin or coin as thanks. Despite the well's picturesque location it is now dry with it’s water piped away to a nearby farm.
In St Breward, at a bend in the road by the school, a lane lined with several houses leads to the right and down the hill. At the end of the lane between 2 houses is a gate and once through this the path plunges down into a wooded valley. St Brewards Well is nearly at the bottom on your left hand sid...
