Huaca Huantille

Huaca Huantille submitted by pab on 21st Oct 2013. Adobe bricks at Huaca Huantille. Stacked alongside the pyramid during the current excavation, these adobe bricks give a good idea of the material used in many parts of Peru. Adobe bricks are made of earth with a fairly high clay content and straw and then only sun-dried, rather than being kiln dried. Only the very dry conditions make this suitable for such significant structures. Photo: Peter Boyle, Sept 2013

St. Pedyr's Well

St. Pedyr's Well submitted by cazzyjane on 4th Sep 2013. St Pedyr's Well, Treloy. There was formerly a chapel close by and the well was resorted to by the sick during the 17th century. After being left to ruin, it was restored in 1953 by the Old Cornwall Society. It is now the most wonderfully peaceful and atmospheric spot.

Five Wells

Five Wells submitted by PaulM on 31st Aug 2001. General view of Five Wells Chambered Cairn (Derbyshire) GR:SK124711. Reputed to be the highest megalithic tomb in Britain, Five Wells chambered cairn stands on the false crest of a limestone plateau, 427m (1400ft) high on Taddington Moor, overlooking the fertile Wye valley. The chambered cairn is now a shadow of its former self after the mound was removed by wall builders around 200 years ago and after extensive excavation by the local antiquarian Thomas Bateman in 1846. Only one of the chambe...

Barclodiad-y-Gawres (Anglesey)

Barclodiad-y-Gawres (Anglesey) submitted by pab on 24th Sep 2012. Even without being able to get into the chamber itself, it is definitely worth making the short trip from the car park to look through the gates. The arrangements at the time of our visit were as displayed on the notices posted by Drew (escorted visits at weekends up till end of October) - which nearly made us decide there would be nothing to see! You may not be able to make out the actual designs because of the lighting etc, but there is certainly enough to see through the gates to ma...

Presaddfed submitted by pab on 25th Sep 2012. Presaddfed, September 2012 Timber support which features in most photos on Portal has now been removed, so the more southerly chamber looks even better. Delightful location - the walk over the field feels more like a procession, with the chambers looking more impressive all the time.
