Museo de Arte Precolombino

Museo de Arte Precolombino submitted by pab on 8th Nov 2013. NASCA figurine, 1 – 800 A.D. Although I knew the name Nasca from the famous ‘Lines’, I had not realised just how rich the rest of their culture and artefacts had been! The information plaque reads: “NASCA Classic Period 1 – 800 A.A. Feminine figurines were quite common among ancient peoples. They constitute objects of ritual and propitiatory character, as well as high symbolic value. Also noteworthy is their individual beauty resulting from the primitive design and Simplici...

Devils Quoits submitted by pab on 12th Mar 2014. Part of the ramparts in the south-eastern segment, showing the extent of the rabbit impact - but also showing just how impressive the stones themselves are! In any other setting, and without the noise and smells, this would be a delight. Hopefully we just visited at a bad time, and in a few years things will be far better - so please don't give up on this place!

Allée Couverte Le Ribl submitted by pab on 17th Dec 2014. "A burial monument dating from around 3000 BC, Le Ribl gallery tomb owes its name to an ancient watercourse partly covered by dunes. The main chamber is accessible from the south-south-east and was formed from two parallel rows of pillars supporting covering slabs along a length of 10 metres. The first pillar was placed at an angle to marl the threshold. At the back of the chamber, a perpendicular apse slab at the axis of the monument can still be made out on one side and a cell on th...

Calling Low Dale

Calling Low Dale submitted by pab on 9th Feb 2015. Photo provided by Alexis Lambourne: "The cave / shelter makes use of a natural overhang in the cliff which makes a roof, this has been added to by enclosing it with a dry stone wall. The enclosed space is small (~6 ft long and maybe 4 feet wide). It is dry-ish, but the strata of the limestone rock just there is vertical making the roof quite loose and a bit drippy. Definitely more of a shelter than a 'home'. "

The roof tiles are a modern addition, to protect the adobe from rain and erosion. Photo, Sept 2013
