St. Pedyr's Well

St. Pedyr's Well submitted by cazzyjane on 4th Sep 2013. St Pedyr's Well, Treloy. There was formerly a chapel close by and the well was resorted to by the sick during the 17th century. After being left to ruin, it was restored in 1953 by the Old Cornwall Society. It is now the most wonderfully peaceful and atmospheric spot.

Cat Hole Cave

Cat Hole Cave submitted by pab on 29th Jan 2013. Cat Hole Cave interior. As access seems no longer possible, I thought people might like to see some photos from inside the cave. This shows one of the recesses at the back of the cave - there were many niches like this, most being very narrow. We didn't have particularly good lighting, so couldn't investigate properly. Seeing the cave definitely helped me understand the description of how the art was found, and how it might have been missed for so long too. Photo taken 28 Sept 2...

Hardings Down West

Hardings Down West submitted by pab on 5th Jul 2013. The south-westerly edge of Hardings Down West, with sem providing both scale and perspective.... This hillfort is very deceptive - from the lane it looks fairly impressive, but its sheer scale is only appreciated when you reach the ramparts. If you really can't enjoy this delightful location during the Portal event arranged as part of the Festival of Archaeology, follow the COFLEIN link on the site page to see a very impressive aerial image. Huaca Huantille

Huaca Huantille submitted by pab on 21st Oct 2013. Adobe bricks at Huaca Huantille. Stacked alongside the pyramid during the current excavation, these adobe bricks give a good idea of the material used in many parts of Peru. Adobe bricks are made of earth with a fairly high clay content and straw and then only sun-dried, rather than being kiln dried. Only the very dry conditions make this suitable for such significant structures. Photo: Peter Boyle, Sept 2013

The roof tiles are a modern addition, to protect the adobe from rain and erosion. Photo, Sept 2013

St Mawnan's Well

St Mawnan's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 4th Sep 2006. St Mawnan’s Well is dedicated to St Mawnan, a Celtic saint. From Mawnan village follow the signs for about 1 mile to the Mawnan Old Parish Church which is situated on the clifftop 4 miles southwest of Falmouth Bay. The church dates from the 13th century. The well is on private land in the garden of The Rectory. A gate guards steep steps down to a sunken path leading to the well. St Mawnan’s Well is still blessed with fresh, clear water and the ambiance is magical. The well has bee...
