Newbridge on Wye
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 12th Apr 2007

Newbridge on Wye submitted by pab on 12th Apr 2007. Newbridge-on-Wye: Pen y bont Standing Stone.
Stopped at this today, 12 April 2007, and it seems to have settled slightly since Shropshire Traveller's picture in 2005. It is difficult to be absolutely sure, but the angle of the holes on this face certainly seem slightly more acute, and the surrounding ground is definitely showing the signs of livestock using it for shelter.
RCAHMW reports it as having been found in a hedge in about 1910, so perhaps it was moved to its current location ...

St Seiriol's Well submitted by pab on 9th May 2007. Site in Anglesey (Sir Ynys Mon)
Walled gardens are always intriguing, and this one was an absolute haven.
The English version of the plaque reads: "This well is traditionally associated with St Seirol who lived in the 6th century AD. The lower part of the well chamber and the nearby oval hut may go back to early Christian times, but the masonry above was rebuilt in the 18th century." (CADW)

This was the nearest I was able to get to this stone in an otherwise wonderful weekend - across a significant stream and several fields away! Firmly in private land, and insufficient time to locate the owner to ask permission ... something for another visit perhaps.

As with several local sites, no-one was available to ask permission to get much closer, but worth a brief halt to look!
COFLEIN reports this Menhir to be:
"Situated within enclosed pasture about 200m to the NE of Werthyr Farm, the standing stone measures about 3m in height, 1.8m in thickness from NE to SW by 0.8m in width. Several packing stones are visible around its base.
Source: Cadw scheduling description."

Set in enclosed pasture, this is the 'North Face', showing the extent of undermining by livestock.

Din Sylwy submitted by pab on 13th May 2007. The North face... The Hillfort is on a limestone hill surrounded by a wall of limestone blocks, and it was very difficult at times to work out which 'Master Craftsman' had constructed which!
This stretch of wall (SH5868181666) faces out to sea above Tan Dinas farm.

Maenau Llwydion, Llangain
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stones
Country: Wales (Carmarthenshire)
Visited: Yes on 15th Jun 2007

Maenau Llwydion, Llangain submitted by pab on 15th Jun 2007. Maenau Llwydion, Langain. One of a pair of monoliths reported in Coflein (NPRN 304151) as standing either side of a narrow lane - which leads to the Quoit Stone at SN38691485.
The stone pictured is on the eastern side of the lane, deeply embedded in the hedgerow. It is a very distinctive colour and texture compared to the other stones in the locality, but I am afraid I don't know its 'technical' composition.

Despite being surrounded by bungalows, this site is still one I find difficult to pass without a few minutes pause. I love the lichen in this shot from 2005 - often gracing my computer's desktop, which seems a good mix of eras!

The Stones Museum contains items from the immediate vicinty, which has been inhabited for over 3000 years when bronze age settlers farmed Margam Mountain. The original Abbey of Margam was founded in 1147 and this picture captures some of the Abbey remains. These ruins are part of the Margam Park country park, adjacent to the Museum. The park/museum are a welcome break for travellers along the M4 (J38).
