Carn Briw
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Cairn
Country: Wales (Pembrokeshire)
Visited: Yes on 21st Oct 2007

Carn Briw submitted by pab on 21st Oct 2007. Carn Briw, from the northern slopes of Mynydd Ingli, on which the wonderful Carn Ingli 'sits' - or should that be 'is enthroned'?
COFLEIN refers to this as simply "A disturbed cairn, 17m in diameter and 1.8m high." The name Carn Briw in fact means just ...'shattered heap of stones'!
What a sad name for such an atmospheric place.

King's Quoit, Manorbier
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: Wales (Pembrokeshire)
Visited: Yes on 1st Dec 2007

King's Quoit, Manorbier submitted by PAB on 1st Dec 2007. Taken 1st December 2007. Most pictures give the impression that Kings Quoit is right on the edge of a precipice, which is slightly misleading. This one was taken from the beach on 1st Dec, between some very heavy showers!

Cerrig Duon stone circle
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 2nd Jan 2008

Cerrig Duon stone circle submitted by pab on 2nd Jan 2008. Newly split stones. Just north of Cerrig Duon, there are many split and/or splitting stones scattered around. Fascinated (but not very knowledgeable) as I am by geology, I particularly liked this one which had obviously come apart fairly recently, as the 2 parts fitted together perfectly.
I assume that the severe temperature changes up here mean that frost can get into the layers in the sedimentary rocks and eventually erode & split them apart? This one was about 1m long, in a stream near...

Across the circle to the bay - it may be modern, but it is a wonderfully pleasant spot to think away the modern world!

Museum of Welsh Life, St Fagans

Site Type: Museum
Country: Wales (South Glamorgan)
Visited: Yes on 24th Feb 2008

Museum of Welsh Life, St Fagans submitted by pab on 24th Feb 2008. Site in South Glamorgan Wales
The 'latest' addition to the magnificent buildings recontructed at St Fagans is the 13th Church of St Teilo. Re-opened in a ceremony on October 2007, this church has been presented in its pre-reformation interior mode.
The history of the re-siting of the church can be followed in either the BBC Wales site (http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/southwest/sites/inpictures/pages/st_teilos.shtml?1) or on the Museum's own pages (http://www.museumwales.ac.uk/en/226/)

Castell Bach (Pen y Graig)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: Wales (Ceredigion)
Visited: Yes on 13th Apr 2008

Castell Bach (Pen y Graig) submitted by pab on 13th Apr 2008. Castell Bach, near Pen y Graig Farm, as seen from the coastal path between New Quay and Llangranog, Ceredigion.
RCAHMW lists the site as having an 'enclosure complex' with a 90m stretch of rampart & ditch at the edge of a plain, about 100-130m across.
The severe coastal erosion has destroyed much of the original area, but it has left a unique cross section across the ditch which is visible over the bay.
RCAHMW also reports the complex to have included circular features identifia...

Visited: Yes on 20th Apr 2008

Bannau Sir Gaer submitted by pab on 20th Apr 2008. As noted in RCAHMW description, many of these stones in this circle are difficult to find - especially if the grass ever gets a chance to grow!
This picture picks out the stones which were visible on our latest walk around the wonderful Carmarthen Fan circuit.

Llyn y Fan Fawr
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stones
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 20th Apr 2008

Llyn y Fan Fawr submitted by pab on 20th Apr 2008. Line of harder rock is clearly visible in this picture (Feb 08) a quarter of the way down Carmarthen Fan northern slope.
When the ice retreated north from the Beacons, much of this material will have been deposited on the lower levels - presumably it will have withstood erosion down there in the same way as it has on the slopes?
Will this not explain the many layered stones doted around north of the ridges?

Mynydd Carnguwch
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Cairn
Country: Wales (Gwynedd)
Visited: Yes on 5th May 2008

Mynydd Carnguwch submitted by pab on 5th May 2008. As noted by Shropshire Traveller, this cairn has a certain 'photographic' attraction - due no doubt to its symmetry?
Taken in October 2007 with my trusty little compact zoom camera, this picture fromt he same spot as ST's shows an enticing entrance at the left of the cairn.
It must surely be worth a climb in its own right if anyone is in the area...
