Cors y Gedol
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Wales (Gwynedd)
Visited: Yes on 7th Mar 2009

Cors y Gedol submitted by pab on 7th Mar 2009. The capstone looks fairly slender from the path - this picture shows it is not exactly small though! COFLEIN gives the dimensions as "c.3.6m by 3.0m & 0.45m thick".
COFLEIN also has an aerial photo of the site, which nicely shows the extent of the original cairn.

Tafarn-y-Bwlch submitted by pab on 10th Apr 2009. View between Talfarn y Bwlch stone pair. This photo, taken Good Friday 2009, shows (I'm fairly sure) Garn Farw on the horizon, bearing 282, and 11.9 miles away.
It really can be that clear in Wales, but please don't tell anyone!

Flimston Castle

Country: Wales (Pembrokeshire)
Visited: Yes on 6th Jun 2009

Flimston Castle submitted by pab on 6th Jun 2009. Flimston Fort. View of ramparts and ditches, taken from the west. The large crack in the cliff shows just how much the headland will have reduced in extent since its use as hillfort.
Photo taken 31 May 2009 - before travelling far to see the site, check first that access is allowed as the raod goes through the Castlemartin (tank) firing range.

Hobbyhorse Bay submitted by pab on 6th Jun 2009. Site in Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro) Wales:
Linney Head Hillfort, Iron Age and earlier. This is the general view from the west. Would have preferred not to have the minibus in shot, but it does actually give some idea of scale...and it did allow us to go through the Artillery Range as well!

West Kennet Avenue

Site Type: Multiple Stone Rows / Avenue
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 31st Aug 2009

West Kennet Avenue submitted by pab on 31st Aug 2009. Wanton destruction along West Kennet Avenue!
ShropshireTraveller's photo of a snail at Avebury aroused my suspicions, and a walk along the Avenue this weekend seemed to confirm them.
Although most of his/her accomplices were skulking at ground level, this brazen lithovore was still munching away in broad daylight.
It is unclear whether the snails are directly eating the rock surface for their shells, or whether they are dissolving & dislodging the grains to get to tasty morsels inside li...

Country: Turkey
Visited: Yes on 27th Feb 2010

Ephesus submitted by pab on 27th Feb 2010. Ephesus: Terraced Houses. Close to the magnificent Library frontage, there is a covered area for which an additional charge is payable.
There are real delights waiting for you inside - these are not terraced houses as those of us who were brought up in British cities may think of them - they are houses built up in terraces up the slope!
From humble shops at street level to villas higher up the slope, you are able to watch craftsmen at work restoring the marble panels, and meander thr...

Syracuse Archaeological Park
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Museum
Country: Italy (Sicily (Sicilia))
Visited: Yes on 19th Apr 2010

Syracuse Archaeological Park submitted by pab on 19th Apr 2010. Inside the cave! The surface of the cave showed the lines of workings, so it isn't a natural cave, but one formed by quarrying. The photo doesn't really show it, but the guide talked us through the progressive layers into the seam the slaves were quarrying.

Caerau Gaer-1 submitted by pab on 25th Apr 2010. Caerau Gaer hillfort, this hidden gem commands wonderful views south over the valley, whilst its close neighbour (Llanddewi Gaer) looks north towards the Precelli Hills.
The lanes linking the two hilltops have the incomparable feel of ancient trackways....with a fox happily wandering along ahead of me!

Country: Wales (Pembrokeshire)
Visited: Yes on 21st Jul 2006

Bedd Arthur submitted by pab on 21st Jul 2006. Setting the scale: Looking due East over Bedd Arthur, it actually looks much smaller than expected from many pictures, and this one lets the landscape re-assert itself rather well! From the same spot, Carn Leidi near St David's was also visible looking due West

Gwal y Filiast
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Wales (Carmarthenshire)
Visited: Yes on 30th Aug 2006

Gwal y Filiast submitted by pab on 30th Aug 2006.
Ancient Track alongside Gwal y Filiast.
The 5 point score for 'ambience' is very well deserved - it brought a real smile to my face when this delightful site came into view along a path which had clearly been used for centuries. The alternative name mentioned elsewhere of Dolwilym (William's Meadow) just doesn't do the place justice!
The surrounding area has been sensitively cleared to let the site breathe since PaulM's initial picture.

Loch of Houlland
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Broch or Nuraghe
Country: Scotland (Shetland)
Visited: Yes on 15th Oct 2006

Loch of Houlland submitted by pab on 15th Oct 2006. View south over the Loch of Houlland and its broch.
The next broch south in the chain around the Shetland coast was sited on the hill at Sae Breck which can be located on this picture from the square remains on the horizon of the WWll building which was built on the same site. There are no readily identifiable remnants of the Sae Breck broch, but its position can be located through the trig point shown on OS maps.
