The Bridestones (Staindale)
Date Added: 9th Nov 2024
Site Type: Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature
Country: England (Yorkshire (North))
Visited: Yes on 28th Aug 2017. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 4

The Bridestones (Staindale) submitted by Sunny100 on 20th Sep 2010. Probably one of the best known of the sandstone rock formations known as The Bridestones at Staindale, North York Moors, is the salt-seller or pepperpot standing at 30 feet tall on its slender stone pedestal. Erosion over thousands of years has caused these curious shapes to occur.

Log Text: The Bridestones are great fun. You can park at Staindale car park in Dalby Forest and a short steep walk takes you to the stones. You can clamber over quite a few of them and there is a nice walk down Dovedale to take you back to the car park.

Log Text: I visited this as part of a round walk of Ampleforth but was very disappointed. Considering the size and decent condition of the site, it is clearly not appreciated locally: it's in a fenced area in the middle of a crop field. The field was clearly moorland some decades ago. The crop field detracts from the ambience a lot. There was no access path, although a couple of signs showed where to walk across it. There is a layby where you can park a car on the nearby road. There is a gate into the site through the fence, but this was overgrown with grass and nettles and it was hard work to open and then bash through the nettles and brambles into the site. Inside the site was overgrown, and I was clearly the first person to enter for some time. Inside, the ditch and banks were interesting but I didn't feel inclined to linger: is was a forlorn place. The site could be considerably enhanced for visitors with a better access path, some mowing and weeding, and some information panels. It deserves better. Lots of potential but needs realizing.

Date Added: 9th Nov 2024
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Yorkshire (North))
Visited: Yes on 29th Jun 2022. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 5

Danby Beacon submitted by JimChampion on 30th Jul 2009. The mound on the left is the Bronze Age burial mound re-used in more modern times as Danby Beacon. The beacon sculpture on the barrow was erected the Danby Beacon Trust in 2008, and first lit on the anniversary of Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. The top of Beacon Hill, beyond the barrow, was the site of a major Second World War radar station.

Log Text: The views from Danby Beacon are superb. The downside is that it is heavily visited, so you may have to put up with crowds. It's a pity that that barrow has been adorned with a modern creation. There is a trig pillar. It can be visited by car, bike, or on foot.

Hand Stone at NZ 59427 01513 – Whilst the crude hand at the top of this the south face of the stone, indicating to the east can still be made out. The writing below is now more or less illegible. R.H. Hayes in his 1988 book “Old Roads and Pannierways in North East Yorkshire” page 42 tells us that it says “ This is the way to Kirby” meaning Kirbymoorside. This photo was taken August 2018

Log Text: Round Hill is the highest point on the North York Moors and should be visited for that reason alone, but the presence of a Bronze age barrow, trig pillar, and many interesting other local sites makes this a must-do. Superb views, and it is surprisingly easy walking to get to such a height along the Cleveland Way.
