Pentre Ifan submitted by Horatio on 22nd Jun 2020. A year later and back at Pentre Ifan for the solstice sunset, all on my own some (apart from a 13yr old Jack Russell this time) I Was expecting at least to see one other (person not Jack Russell) at this site for the sunset.
That morning I'd gone to see the sunrise at Gors Fawr stone circle and even left my house in the rain knowing there was zero chance of seeing a sunrise, I definitely was not disappointed, crap weather but I enjoyed being amongst the stones as the solstice sun rose, the cu...

Log Text: A narrow country road takes you to within 100 meters of this site. There is parking for about 8 cars in a layby. Because of the popularity of the site this is not always sufficient! There is an information board with artwork. You can walk around the site and touch the stones. The capstone is almost unbelievably perched on the tips of the uprights as if hovering in midair.....the whole vision is quite astonishing.

Log Text: This stone with rock art has been moved slightly since the last recorded visit, but is in the same general location and the carvings are face-up. It is now slightly further away from the pedestrian path and surrounded by lavender plants so is unlikely to be used as a seat. Unfortunately there is no information plaque and hundreds of people pass this by without knowing if its importance or beauty. The exact grid ref is SE 59968 52096: on the right of the main path from the Lendall entrance to the gardens to the museum front door, and quite close to the museum itself.

Allan Tofts 5c submitted by kelpie on 1st Sep 2004. One of the most decorated stones on the moor, cup marks and interlinking lines are clearly seen.

Log Text: To find, this requires an accurate GPS and exact grid reference (5 figures easting and northing) as there are numerous other rocks in the area and navigation is confusing. It is somewhat on its own in boggy vegetation close to several Bronze age cairns. The rock art is not very obvious because the rock has been partially covered by vegetation encroaching around the edges and onto the top surface. Encrusting lichens cover over half of the top surface. Nonetheless, the visible features include several cups, though the interconnecting lines are less visible.

Log Text: This is one of the easier stones with rock art to locate at Allan Tofts as it is right next to a track, but a good GPS and accurate grid reference will still help as there are many other nearby stones and the rock art is not very visible. Mossy growth almost completely obscured the cups and ring.

Log Text: This rock is in a fairly featureless boggy area with many other surrounding stones, and unless you have an accurate GPS and exact grid reference you may struggle to find it. A few large cup marks were discernible but much of the top of the rock is flush with the vegetation and it has encroached over the sides and onto the top. there is also much encrusting lichen. The linear markings were not visible and animal droppings had filled one of the cups.

Log Text: Ana Cross and barrow are slap in the middle of Spaunton Moor and a fair walk is required to get to it, though a mountain bike would give access along the moorland track from Chimney Bank at Rosedale Abbey. I walked across from Lastingham to the south. The view on approach with the heather in bloom was superb. Apart from a broad moorland scene, there is not much else to be seen. I am not sure that I like crosses on barrows, as the one de-faces the other somewhat, but if taken as a combination it is a suitable elevation from which to display a cross so that it can be seen from a distance.

St Cedd's Well submitted by kelpie on 21st Feb 2004. SE 7290 9047
St Cedd was granted land by Ethelwald and aided by his brother, Chad, built a monastery near Lastingham. This well bears his name and the stones for the housing are said to have come from Rosedale Abbey. Probably a christianised pagan well.

The stone is slowly being overgrown and some cup marks are disappearing from view. However I am now starting to see cup marks where there aren't supposed to be any.

Log Text: This rock is quite easy to find if you have a GPA and an accurate grid reference. It is a a few yards south from the track across Stony Marl Moor from Ravenscar Beacon, and lies along a linear ditch. At the time of visit a small fire had cleared the vegetation around it and the cups and linear markings were easily visible. The rock is quite heavily ornamented and is one of the better Ravenscar rock art examples.

Log Text: This is an excellent rock with interesting markings, well worth the effort of tracking down. It's a fair walk across tall heather from the track across the moor. You will need a GPS and accurate grid reference to find it, and will need to be prepared for a few scratches on your legs. The two cup-and-ring marks are bi-sected by a pecked line.

Lord Stones Cairn Circle. submitted by johndhunter on 18th May 2019. This is a very basic sketch map (not to scale). The grid references given below are from my gps. The legend for the map is as follows:
RB1 – Round Barrow at NZ 52364 02986. The Three Lords’ Stone boundary stone is one of its kerb stones
RB2 – Round Barrow at NZ 52379 03002
RB3 – Round Barrow at NZ 52408 03134
RB4 – Round Barrow at NZ 52148 03170
Modern Stone Circle at NZ 52533 03268 – Actually a semi circle of five stones and is very
modern, from about 2013.

Log Text: The two barrows by the Three Lords Stone are the most rewarding of these features, retaining a heather covering and the stone itself. RB3 retains some kerb stones but is a bit eroded and a track has been driven right next to it.

Log Text: The Cheshire Stone overlooks Garfit Gap and Hasty Bank, and contains a natural series of hollows which Smith and Walker (2008) consider may have been enhanced by notching and addition of other cups and hollows in pre-historic times. This is hard to get to in summer due to bracken and lack of a direct path, but is worth the effort. It's a bit of a leap across a chasm to get on top but worth it. Personally I agree that the hollows look to have been extensively reworked by the hand of pre-historic peoples.

Log Text: GPS needed! This rock is a really excellent find but is not easy to locate. It is well off the path between Garfit Gap and Garfit farm and has to be approached from the Garfit Gap (NW) side through waste-high bracken down a fairly steep slope. The markings are very interesting and there is an stunning view down Bilsdale: you can really see why it was chosen as a rock art location. An excellent lunch spot.

Log Text: I tried to track this down using the coordinates in Smith BA and Walker AA 2008 Rock Art and Ritual. The History Press. However, the coordinates in the book are erroneous and also the field boundaries in the region have been altered since that book was written. The rock now has a fair sized Holly tree growing out of a crevice so is easy to locate from that if you know the rough area to look in. The cups and surrounding ring were faint but discernible. It's a good-looking rock.
