Taken on my mobile phone, as its about the first time I've not seen anyone sat or playing around its base. Will try and get some better photos on our next trip to Carlisle. Standing just over 100m to the east of the eastern wall of the cathedral, the cross stands on the site of an earlier cross and marks the centre of Carlisle City.

Black Down (Dorset) submitted by TimPrevett on 15th Jan 2021. "The Black Down stone circle consists of five ‘totems’ built from local Forest Marble stone. One is aligned with true north and the other four with the midwinter and midsummer solstice sunrises and sunsets. In clear conditions at each of these times, the Sun’s full disc shines through an opening in one of the totems, lighting up a central rock of Portland stone." Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle submitted by Anne T on 10th Oct 2018. This piece of carved stone is recorded in the Corpus of Anglo Saxon Stone Sculpture as the 'Bamburgh Castle' stone. Its style dates it to the last quarter of the eighth century to the first quarter of the ninth. Originally described in the 19th century as part of a large cross head, it is know known to be part of the arm of a stone chair or throne. A reproduction can be found outside the keep of the castle, although the Corpus says it is not clear if it is meant to be part of the back or seat.
