Carlisle Cross

Carlisle Cross submitted by Anne T on 10th Jan 2019. The Carlisle Cross, with its base and steps in deep shade. Taken on my mobile phone, as its about the first time I've not seen anyone sat or playing around its base. Will try and get some better photos on our next trip to Carlisle. Standing just over 100m to the east of the eastern wall of the cathedral, the cross stands on the site of an earlier cross and marks the centre of Carlisle City.

Drizzlecombe Settlement submitted by ernar on 17th Oct 2004. Settlement ruins on Drizzlecombe. With a breathtaking view of the megalithic complex and the valley, this settlement was located uphill from the several cairns and Stone Rows forming the Complex. Behind the stone maniacs and the grass managers (sheep) you can see the westernmost cairn shown on the OS map.

National Park Visitors Centre Postbridge

National Park Visitors Centre Postbridge submitted by dodomad on 12th Jul 2022. New centre, double in size, our state-of-the-art centre features the latest technology to bring history to life in amazing detail, giving you a unique and special experience. One of the highlights is the story of the internationally significant Bronze Age finds at Whitehorse Hill. In 2011, a cist was excavated at Whitehorse Hill when one of the stones fell out of the peat mound covering it. Due to the unusual conditions amazingly, cremated human remains and other organic material had b...

Bincombe Barrows

Bincombe Barrows submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Nov 2003. Bincombe Barrows SY689847; these sit on top of a hill overlooking Preston, and Upwey / Littlemoor parts of Weymouth. Notable finds here - details to follow in a comment. Shame that the Pylons & phone mast / aerials impose on an otherwise spectacular setting, not far from Chalbury hillfort, and the Came Wood / Down Barrow cemetery.

Maiden Castle (Dorset)

Maiden Castle (Dorset) submitted by pab on 16th Oct 2011. Moon at dawn over Maiden Castle. Just before sunrise, with the almost full moon about to set. One of those mornings when you feel it is worth getting up early to catch nature's magic working in a magnificent setting. This photo is looking across the north east rim, with the early morning mist beginning to catch the light from the rising sun. October 2011

Tout Quarry Sculpture Park Stone Circle

Tout Quarry Sculpture Park Stone Circle submitted by TimPrevett on 14th Aug 2017. 12/08/17 This circle (more of a 'cove' of stones, I suggest) at Portland's Tout Quarry Sculpture Park was officially opened on June 21st 2017. It's just on the south side of the arterial route at the top of north end of Portland, parking at The Heights Hotel just across the road, or if that's full, parking around the corner to the north of the hotel near The Olympic Rings monument. Not to be confused with "The Circle of Stones" further into the sculpture park.

Nine Stones (Dorset) submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. Boxing Day 2004. Composite image. A bright sunny morning, but the trees keep this little circle in the shade. Only eight stones are visible: the ninth is being engulfed by the roots of the large beech tree on the left of the picture.

Came Wood Barrow Cemetery (SY699855) This cemetery extends from the wood, across the hill top, with a glorious view to the coast, including Chalbury Hill Fort, and the impressive Bincombe Barrows. This picture is taken on top of only one of three bank barrows (all in Dorset) with two round barrows to the left (N); the barrows go from behind the camera through the fields and into the wood.

Agglestone

Agglestone submitted by TimPrevett on 12th Aug 2005. Shropshire Traveller, Cassie the Dog, Teufel, Sharon, Izzy and Nat (front) at the enormous Agglestone - an outcrop of ironstone, which sits upon a mound within a vast natural amphitheatre. It used to be erect, and able to rock (ie. a logan stone), but the stone is now fallen. Attributed to Satanic throwing, and fancifully used for druidic rites, it is impressive. The rock is ironstone, and if you look carefully, in many places the rock does actually look like badly rusted metal. On the Dorset Me...
