Agglestone

Agglestone submitted by TimPrevett on 12th Aug 2005. Shropshire Traveller, Cassie the Dog, Teufel, Sharon, Izzy and Nat (front) at the enormous Agglestone - an outcrop of ironstone, which sits upon a mound within a vast natural amphitheatre. It used to be erect, and able to rock (ie. a logan stone), but the stone is now fallen. Attributed to Satanic throwing, and fancifully used for druidic rites, it is impressive. The rock is ironstone, and if you look carefully, in many places the rock does actually look like badly rusted metal. On the Dorset Me...

Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology submitted by Blingo_von_Trumpenstein on 31st Jan 2011. Ashmolean Museums jadeite axes on display (9 displayed together on 3 shelves - photo taken with permission through the glass - very tricky). Jadeite - aaaaaaaah - lovely jadeite. These are the pinnacle of polishing of stone axes - they are insane. Just over 100 known in Britain (all from stone quarried from Monte Viso, Italian Alps - very hard to get to). Many more known from Italy and France. These are truly magical to hold. I have held several dozen of them and they make me tingle every ti...

Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle submitted by Anne T on 10th Oct 2018. This piece of carved stone is recorded in the Corpus of Anglo Saxon Stone Sculpture as the 'Bamburgh Castle' stone. Its style dates it to the last quarter of the eighth century to the first quarter of the ninth. Originally described in the 19th century as part of a large cross head, it is know known to be part of the arm of a stone chair or throne. A reproduction can be found outside the keep of the castle, although the Corpus says it is not clear if it is meant to be part of the back or seat.

Bincombe Barrows submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Nov 2003. Bincombe Barrows SY689847; these sit on top of a hill overlooking Preston, and Upwey / Littlemoor parts of Weymouth. Notable finds here - details to follow in a comment. Shame that the Pylons & phone mast / aerials impose on an otherwise spectacular setting, not far from Chalbury hillfort, and the Came Wood / Down Barrow cemetery.

Black Down (Dorset)

Black Down (Dorset) submitted by TimPrevett on 15th Jan 2021. "The Black Down stone circle consists of five ‘totems’ built from local Forest Marble stone. One is aligned with true north and the other four with the midwinter and midsummer solstice sunrises and sunsets. In clear conditions at each of these times, the Sun’s full disc shines through an opening in one of the totems, lighting up a central rock of Portland stone." "The circle is part of a larger project that finds creative ways to navigate and explore the South Dorset Ridgeway. A second ...

This picture is taken on top of only one of three bank barrows (all in Dorset) with two round barrows to the left (N); the barrows go from behind the camera through the fields and into the wood.

Carlisle Cross submitted by Anne T on 10th Jan 2019. The Carlisle Cross, with its base and steps in deep shade. Taken on my mobile phone, as its about the first time I've not seen anyone sat or playing around its base. Will try and get some better photos on our next trip to Carlisle. Standing just over 100m to the east of the eastern wall of the cathedral, the cross stands on the site of an earlier cross and marks the centre of Carlisle City.
