D43 Emmen Schimmeres submitted by SolarMegalith on 28th Jul 2009. The unique passage grave in Netherlands lies in the Western part of the Emmen town on the small hill. The closest "long graves" like this lie near Oldenburg (Germany). There are two burial chambers and the tomb is orientated north - south.

The two Havelteberg monuments are a long way west from the string of hunebedden between Emmen and Assen. But they're worth a detour!
D54 and D53 are within 400ms of each other in sandy heathland.
D53 is a moster hunebed in superb shape and even has its portal stones.

In the distance is the village of Castleton and in the centre of the picture towards the right hand side of wood can be seen Danby Church all on its own in the middle of the Dale.

It is damaged by destruction attempts. 3 out of probably 6 capstones are preserved, but fallen into the chamber. Fragments of a fourth capstone are scattered around. Two orthostats in the South are removed two others are out of place. (March 2009)

The East-West orientated chamber measures 12,5m x 3m (clear 10,5m x 1,6m). 3 out of probably 8 capstones are completely preserved, but fallen into the chamber like fragments of two other capstones. Except for one orthostat in the NE, all orthostats are preserved, but some are slightly out of place as a result of the destruction activities.
