Loch of Houlland

Loch of Houlland submitted by pab on 28th Oct 2006. The broch at the Loch of Houlland is one of about 120 around the coast of Shetland. It is very close to the lighthouse at Echaness, which must have some of the most spectacular sea scenery in the UK. It would be hard to improve on the description given in the very informative guide I used in Shetland (written by Peter Guy: Walking the Coastline of Shetland, ISBN:1904746179) - "The broch dominates a small promontory which juts out from the NW into the loch. It is an impressive ruin with walls on ...

Ness of Burgi

Ness of Burgi submitted by PAB on 22nd Oct 2006. The Fort on the Ness of Burgi, looking west from the coastline. This Fort faces across the bay to Jarsloff and the ramparts of Tonga Fort. The Royal Commission for Ancient & Historical Monuments in Scotland (RCAHMS) describes the Fort as: "A gatehouse fort, probably datable to about 100 BC, isolated by a rampart, with a ditch on either side, cutting across the neck of the peninsula on which it stands." It notes that the site was excavated in 1935, and again in 1983 when 'a single cutt...

Piper's Crag Stone

Piper's Crag Stone submitted by andy_h on 17th May 2003. A prominent outcrop featuring deep Cup and Ring markings. The Northern Edge of Ilkley Moor is strewn with marked rocks. Between the Swastika Stone and Piper's Crag Stone are The Anvil and The Sepulchre Stone, who's markings were unfortunately too worn to photograph well. This also applies to the nearby Neb Stone. A large upended rock with 'possible' cup marks, laying on other cup marked stones now built into a wall.

Subsequently recorded by the CSI:Rombalds Moor Project and added to ERA as Pancake Ridge 02. This stone has several cup marks scattered about the upper surface. A couple of them may be best described as 'cup-like depressions', because it's difficult to be 100% about their artificiality. Image captured 22/1/2012.
