This wonderful steep sided, flat topped hill rises 450 feet out of the Somerset Levels not far from the sea in Bridgwater Bay. Legend has it that it was created by the Devil when he was carving out Cheddar Gorge, and threw a handful of rock out towards the sea. Geology has it that this limestone outcrop of the Mendip hills dates from the Jurassic times of 300 million years ago. Personally, I always think it looks a bit like the hill out of Close Enco...

The Herefordshire Beacon (aka British Camp) was constructed around the 4th century B.C. and in the centuries following, more banks and ditches were built lower down the hillside. This iron age hill fort is one of a remarkable series of such sites that extend in a belt from the Dorset coast into north-eastern Wales. There are permissive paths through this field, and near the white horses there is a gate leading to a path up through the ramparts to the interior.
