Log Text: Onwards southward slightly downhill to a field wall where there is another barrow with a Duke Stone on top, named as Two Barrows. Looking for the second, and it can be seen right under the corner of the walls, no doubt it has been used as a boundary corner for a long time.

Hamel Down Beacon cairn

Hamel Down Beacon cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 14th Jan 2023. On the southern top of Hameldown at 517m, at a corner of the field wall, is a prominent large cairn. The field wall makes no attempt to avoid the cairn, running right over it, but not across the centre. The cairn has been cut away from the western side within the walled field. Here seen from the south.

Log Text: On to the southern top of Hameldown at 517m, at a corner of the field wall, is another prominent large cairn, again with a Duke Stone on its top. The field wall makes no attempt to avoid the cairn, running right over it, but not across the centre. From here the views to the south open up with almost the whole of the southern moor and southeast Devon to be seen.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Walking back northwards along the ridge and from the top of Broad Barrow, Hamel Down Cross can be seen shining in the sun away from the modern track to the west, so I go for a look. It’s a lovely weathered old stone cross which has lost its head and one of its arms. It has some sort of carving on it's east face, probably a Duke of Somerset boundary marking, but the cross clearly predates that.

Log Text: Walk from Hound Tor over the top and down to the deserted medieval village in a dip on the eastern side of the Tor. This started in the bronze age, but the remains to be seen these days are from the medieval period. The remains include several longhouses and other buildings which are really fascinating to wander around, trying to figure out what was what.

Corndon Down N Cairns

Corndon Down N Cairns submitted by TheCaptain on 21st Dec 2022. I thought I saw signs of a possible row emanating from the northwestern side of the eastern cairn but we weren't hanging around this grey cold windy day, so I didn't spend any time having a proper look.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Walk from Ponsworthy up and over Corndon Hill, taking in the money pit, Sharp Tor and Dr Blackall's ride, stopping for lunch at the Tavistock Inn. At the top of the northern summit, east west across the top, are two large cairns about 20 to 25 metres diameter, both of which have been mutilated by previous visitors to make crude shelters. There is an ancient reave running across the hill, and I thought I saw signs of a possible row emanating from the northwestern side of the eastern cairn but we weren't hanging around this grey cold windy day, so I didn't spend any time having a proper look.

Log Text: Walk from Ponsworthy up and over Corndon Hill, taking in the money pit, Sharp Tor and Dr Blackall's ride, stopping for lunch at the Tavistock Inn. At the top of the main, southern summit, is a granite tor surrounded by masses of cairn material. About 50 metres to the north is another large cairn, which also encompasses a granite outcrop. Both are about 25 metres diameter. To the west of the tor top cairn are several edge set slabs in a line, which may have once formed part of a stone row up here. Butler states that it is possible that these are the remains of a double stone row. Crossing recorded an unfound treble stone row somewhere in the region, with a double stone row not far off. As for the northern summit, we weren't hanging around this grey cold windy day, so I didn't spend any time having a proper look.

Log Text: A day on Hadrians Wall. Drive to Housesteads, bus to The Sill, then walk up to the trig point on Winshield Crag before walking eastwards along Hadrians wall back to Housesteads Fort, having lunch at Sycamore Gap. A long look round Housesteads Fort with its large colourful artwork gatehouse created for the 1900 years celebrations, fabulous latrines and a decent little museum.

Log Text: Day out walking and stopped for a quick look here on the way home. The field has been harvested, leaving the long raised lump in the ground standing proud. No obviously easy way into the field, so I satisfied myself with a view from the road.

St Nicholas (West Tanfield) submitted by TheCaptain on 8th Oct 2022. In the churchyard is what looks like a very ancient cross shaft mounted on a block. Its obviously far older than anything else in the graveyard, but I saw nothing written on or about it.

Log Text: After visiting the Thornborough Henges on my way back from Northumberland, I call in to the Bull Inn at West Tanfield for a pint, and notice that there is something marked at the local church. A very interesting old place with pele tower outside; I cannot look inside the church as there is building work going on, but outside in the churchyard, there is what looks like a very interesting and ancient cross shaft mounted on a block. Its obviously far older than anything else in the graveyard, but I see nothing written on or about it.

Thornborough S submitted by JJ on 23rd Aug 2004. Thornborough south henge
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Travelling home from Northumberland, and the weather forecast was good, so I decided to go the eastern route and break my journey to have a look at the Thornborough Henges. After a drive around several small roads, I found a place to park with access to the fields between the southern and central henges. I decided to go walk around the henges, and started with the southern one, a fair walk on a blowy day, but nice when the sun came out. The large henge is not so well formed as I had expected, no doubt worn down over the centuries, and not much to see other than the circular bank; the internal ditch is barely noticeable.

Log Text: Crossing back across the roadway, I go in for a look and walk around the central henge. This banks of this one are more substantial, but in places are very damaged by badgers or rabbits. The internal ditch is again slight, but can be made out here. I walked north to try to get to the northern henge, but it was not possible to get across the northern road and in to see it.

Thornborough N

Thornborough N submitted by SumDoood on 24th Apr 2017. (Arriving only just in time, I had cut down the four Roman soldiers and told them to get their sorry European arses back to Boroughbridge, and not to bother my henge again. Meanwhile...) I was very impressed by this henge and the fact that it is still so complete, the ditch being on average 3.0m deep and the bank an average of 3.0m high.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Back to the car for the small drive round to the woodland at the western side of the northern henge, and there was room to park, and then follow one of several paths into the woodland. This northern henge is much more like it, very well preserved, both the banks and internal ditch. The atmosphere in this woodland is much more pleasant than the open fields of the other two. Time to look for a pub and a pint.

Corbridge Crosses

Corbridge Crosses submitted by Anne T on 12th Sep 2019. The old market cross, which stood upon steps and a Roman altar, was removed from it's original place in 1807, and stood outside the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Newcastle. It was returned to Corbridge in the 20th century, but now sits 2m to the east of the door into the Pele Tower. Very worn, it once had an inscription, plus dog tooth ornament.
