Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: France (Midi:Tarn (81))
Visited: Couldn't find on 19th Mar 2000

Saint-Paul Dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 26th Jan 2006. Up in the hills covered with vineyards for the lovely Gaillac wine, can be found this relatively large dolmen.
The large white capstone is 2 metres off the ground covering a chamber 4 metres by 2 metres, with the usual two sidestones and a backstone. The northern side slab is broken, and only survives at the front half of the chamber.

ceresbeith visited on 26th Oct 2017 Condition: 4 Ambience: 4 Access: 4 again, not signed at all, drove past 3 times before we decided to try this track, but there's a small space to park on the road and then a short walk up a forestry track. The menhir itself is beautiful with a lovely ambience around it. Had a grumpy, hot, tired child with me but it was still a great visit.

Log Text: A rainy day exploring in the mountains south of Carcassonne. Drive S to Couiza, Arques, Peyrepertuse, Quéribus. Gorges de Galamus, more castles and driving, to Quillan. Hoped to see this stone from the roadside, but didn't
Four-És-Feins
Trip No.203 Entry No.599 Date Added: 13th Jun 2020
Site Type: Passage Grave
Country: France (Bretagne:Ille-et-Vilaine (35))
Visited: Couldn't find on 28th Jun 2005

Four-És-Feins submitted by thecaptain on 20th Jun 2009. I found a place in a woodland to the left of the track, with a mound in it, and what looked to be some lumps sticking up, but it was very overgrown. It has to be here, surely. Closer inspection amongst the ivy and brambles, and there were clearly a few side set slabs sticking up through the ground.

Log Text: This menhir is suposedly right beside the road, but I could not find it. According to the map, it is just into the woodland, which is exceedingly densely covered in ferns, and inaccsessible.

Log Text: This menhir is in a private garden with a massive thick hedge surrounding it. I didn't get to see the stone, but it is supposedly about 2 metres in height.

Log Text: Supposedly 8 metres tall, and re-erected recently when they built the new road, I could not find this. I asked an old gent with a straw hat and waving a stick, who was pushing a wheelbarrow of grass. He took great delight in telling me how I could get to see it, although it was on private land, but he was fairly difficult to understand. From what I did understand, I thought he said it was in a quarry area, I had several looks, from various points of attack, but could not find it. Bummer.
Alignement de Leintant
Trip No.203 Entry No.547 Date Added: 2nd Jun 2020
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment
Country: France (Bretagne:Finistère (29))
Visited: Couldn't find on 23rd Jun 2005
Log Text: Row of fallen menhirs now incorporated into a bank at the edge of a field. I could find no trace of this alignment, supposed to contain one standing and three fallen menhirs, which was said to align on mid-summer sunrise. I found the farm, and went up and down the road several times, with no luck. Supposedly, the standing stone is nearly 4 metres tall and beside the road.....

Log Text: Supposedly the remains of this dolmen can be found near to the coast path just outside the municipal camping. It is said that if you stand with your chin resting on the menhir out on Ile Tariec, then the solstice sunrise used to rise between the legs of this dolmen. It is not marked on any of my maps, and despite now being fallen, I was told that I should be able to find it. However, despite spending well over an hour looking (and enjoying the walk) I could find no sign of this. It could easily be there somewhere in amongst the bracken and the dunes, which are all up and down, and riddled with wartime bunkers.

Log Text: I went for quite a walk to look for these, but in the end found nothing. They are at the top of a hill in a wood, protected by lots of gorse and bracken overgrown heathland, with no obvious pathway through.
Dolmen de Keradiguen
Trip No.203 Entry No.490 Date Added: 27th May 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: France (Bretagne:Finistère (29))
Visited: Couldn't find on 19th Jun 2005
Log Text: I was unable to find a parking place near to this, and was thus unable to have a proper look. The road is extremely busy - everyone must be heading out to the beaches. Perhaps I'll try again later.
Baie des Trépassés mégalithe
Trip No.203 Entry No.479 Date Added: 26th May 2020
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: France (Bretagne:Finistère (29))
Visited: Couldn't find on 18th Jun 2005

Baie des Trépassés mégalithe submitted by TheCaptain on 26th May 2020. There used to be a large menhir here, but no longer. Nor the ancient city of Y, which is now under the sea because the King's daughter sold herself to the devil. This bay is also where the dead set sail from on their final voyage to the Ile de Sein.
There are lots of legends and stories surrounding this beautiful bay, but no menhir anymore.

Log Text: I had three attempts at finding the remnants of this once important set of eight parallel rows, but found nothing. The best I found was a bit of uncultivated land, completely covered in gorse and not possible to get to, which was in about the right place, so that was probably it. I found no signs or any other reference to it until afterwards, and the place I found was definately the right place.

Menhir de Crucuny 1 submitted by stollentroll on 14th Dec 2005. Menhir on top of the tumulus Crucuny.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: On top of the tumulus, to the north of the hamlet, is a menhir, 2.8 metres tall, with axes carved on it. But it is all very overgrown and covered in gorse, and I could not get to see anything at close quarters.

Country: France (Bretagne:Morbihan (56))
Visited: Couldn't find on 12th Jun 2005

Dolmen de Mane Rohr submitted by Martin_L on 31st Jan 2009. Dolmen de Mane Rohr at dusk in May 2001. It is an absolutely terrific site, but somewhat overgrown. In 2001 it was possible to cross a sports ground and then follow a narrow track through a little "jungle". It is not signposted, but if you are in this area you should buy the 1:25000 map anyway :-)

Log Text: Despite being clearly marked on the map, besides the sports ground and with a footpath to it, I could find no way through the houses to the hilltop position in the real world.
