(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: A second trip to the 9 Maidens this week, the field was still absolutely sodden, and we were over our ankles in places, which seemed strange as it is all on a reasonable slope and looked like it should drain reasonably well. At the far side of the field are the Maidens, 9 evenly spaced stones, a couple of which are now only stumps. However, the field and hedges around here are littered with large stones, and there is no doubt that there once could have been many more in this row.

Log Text: From the top of Buttern Hill, in misty drizzly weather, I head down the far side through a load of inquisitive cattle to the source of the river Fowey and the Buttern Hill stone row, which is easier to find than I was expecting, and with larger stones. Probably about a dozen stones remain to be found, with a good section of 5 evenly spaced nearer the uphill, northern end. I head back skirting much of Buttern Hill on its north side, then down the stream trying to avoid the wet on the way back to the car, but still get in knee deep at one place! A change of footwear, then head for a pint at the Rising Sun, Altarnun.

Log Text: Parked at the rest area beside the A30 near Temple and walked southwest across the moor to exploor Cardinham Moor stone row. Pass beside the large pond, no doubt some mining remnant, then can see a stone standing up on the hillside. Once up there a few more come into sight. Its not straight, is it !! I follow it south to a large leaning pillar, which I later see described as Stone 1, the southern end. However, I see another stone standing over on the slopes of St Bellarmin's Tor, so went for a look, where I found not only the standing stone, but also couple more, in as good a line as the rest of the row. They also show up on the detailed OS maps (about SX 131 712). Back to the car then go for a couple of halves at the Blisland Inn.

Piskey’s Hall – The Fairy’s Fogou

Piskey’s Hall – The Fairy’s Fogou submitted by coin on 3rd Nov 2013. So... Getting to this site is a welcome voyage, arriving at the gate (higher than a normal one) I read a friendly sign- warning me of a bull... So the landowner obviously doesn't want people visiting this site. Climbing over the gate I am affronted with another welcoming feature- electric fence. Slipping under the offending wire, and edging around the field keeping an eye out for the bull of terror, I approach the mound if earth and stones. When I reach it, I am presented with another electric f...

Log Text: I want to stop for my pasty at the Piskeys Hall fogou, but it takes me several attempts to find it, and only then I have to climb over a gate into a thankfully empty field, but see nothing like any of the pictures I have seen. It must be over by the far edge of the field somewhere, but there's nothing obvious, just a very overgrown clump. Its all very overgrown, and at first I cannot find anything to see, but then I do see a stone lined entrance amongst the gorse and brambles which I am just about able to get to. Yes, I have found the main structure and am able to get down into it. This one seems more like a large entrance grave than the other fogous I have seen, but who am I to argue.

Log Text: After struggling to find somewhere to eat, I really want to see Chun Quoit and Castle at sundown, so with a rapid drive, being guided by another force, I get to the bottom of the hill already in full shadow. Its almost 30 years since I last climbed the hill to visit the Chûn sites. A rapid walk up to the top, its a long way, and I get to the quoit just as it is in the golden glow of the sunset, but perhaps now past its best. Lots of photos, including the sun setting through the stones, then a quick look around the wonderful castle, and back down the hill to the car. Easy drive home with a fabulous full strawberry moon rising, and I am back to the cottage just before 11:00.

Trehudreth Downs row

Trehudreth Downs row submitted by Bladup on 16th Jul 2015. Trehudreth Downs row. The western part of the stone row (SX125730).
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: A mixed weather forecast for today, and after some horrendous rain, it stops so I go for an extensive exploration of Trehudreth Down, with its standing stones and stone row. Apart from the standing stone to the south, nothing much is readily seen, so I resort to using my GPS, and eventually find a long fallen stone, possibly the northeastern end. I find about 5 more stumps and little stones spaced out in a southwestern direction, but then anything of the stone row is hard to find, and a large herd of cattle with their young, mean I keep away from much of the central part it. I pass well clear of the cows and further on I find a sort of stone setting, which I think is what I have called Trehudreth Downs B stone setting. Further west, and a see about half a dozen evenly spaced stones in a haphazard row descending the slope, which matches to the western end of the row on the map. Without seeing anything between the eastern and western ends, it wouldnt surprise me if it was two seperate rows, as the two ends do not really line up with each other.

Halliggye

Halliggye submitted by JimChampion on 29th Sep 2006. Entrance to the creep at the northern end of the main passage. The original entrance (now bricked up and buried) is at the far end of this creep.

Log Text: A day down to The Lizard for a couple of fogous and the Verdant Brewery. Start with Halliggye Fogou, but found it hard to find in the Trelowarren Estate. After driving all around the estate, I found a place to park near the house, but could still find no obvious signs to the fogou despite it being in the care of EH. After a lot of walking and asking people, I eventually found it. The way back to the car was easier, and at a sort of back entrance to the carpark there was indeed a sign with a map showing the way to the fogou. Once you find the fogou, what a fabulous thing it is. It is set within a little tended area, and there is a plan of what to find underground. This does help to orientate yourself once in, but it is pitch black and a good torch is needed. My torch was not great, so I found myself stumbling about a bit! The way down into the fogou was narrow and damp, despite there being no rain for several days, then past some iron gates used to close the fogou to the public at certain times to protect the bats, then into the dark. Two long passages and two small creep passages, all in total darkness. In the further passage I had a couple of bats flying around, but disappointingly never got one in a picture. Magic.

Log Text: Dropping down from Carn Kenidjack, and after a slight detour to refresh myself at The North Inn, I head towards the coast and look for the Lower Boscaswell Fougou. Not being able to find it initially, I cheat and look it up on the portal. Ah, through the cow field and round the other side, over a stile and there it is. These days theres just a small chamber like space behind the opening, and daylight can be seen up a smaller side passage. Such a large stone area here, makes me wonder how big this might have once been. I'd better get on with my walk as time is getting on, and I have been getting further off route, so no time to try find the Pendeen one.
