Log Text: Unmarked on any of my maps, but just at the junction of the D.19 and the little road which runs north towards Les Cabranes, can be seen a mound. Closer inspection shows it to have the remains of a reasonable dolmen chamber within it, 3.5 metres long, 1.2 metres wide and with a capstone covering only its eastern half. It makes me wonder just how many more dolmens and burial mounds like this there are around here.

Log Text: Just beside the little road which runs off the D.19 to the north of St-Jean-de-Laur towards Les Cabranes, can be seen the remains of this dolmen. Three metres long, by 1.8 metres wide and 2 metres tall, the chamber has only one side slab, but is kept together with a drystone wall on the northern side. It has in the past been used as an animal shelter, and there are masses of ants everywhere.

Log Text: Just to the west of the D.19 road to the north of St-Jean-de-Laur, this initially looks to be a small dolmen, but upon closer inspection is probably just half of the remains of one. It is well fenced off, and proper acces to investigate it fully cannot be obtained.

Log Text: This dolmen is found a couple of kilometres to the northwest of Laramière, along the GR.36 footpath, but which for this stretch is a driveable track. It is then a hundred or so metres walk into the forest, but signposted.

This is another much larger than average dolmen for round here, still mostly contained within its mound. Unfortunately, at some time in the past, the capstone and chamber ends have been broken and incorporated into a wall. The chamber is over 4 metres in length, 2 metres wide and 2 metres high, and faces substantially to the south of east, at 147°. The capstone was probably once nicely shaped, and 3.5 metres wide at the front end. There are other dolmens to be found in the woods around here.

Log Text: Just to the south of the D.55 road between Beauregard and Laramière, and signposted, this dolmen is sat in a little clearing beside a trackway. Much larger than the average round here, this dolmen has a 6 metre by 4 metre capstone sitting on top of a 5 metre long chamber facing east at 100°. The dolmen still sits in the remains of its mound, which possibly still has some remains of a surrounding circle of stones. On top of the capstone, above the entrance to the chamber, there is a basin, or large cupule cut into the rock. The ambience of the place is spoiled by masses of plastic sheeting covered hay bales in the immediate vicinity.

Log Text: Just off of the GR.36 footpath a couple of kilometres to the southeast of Varaire, in a field full of orchids can be found this little broken dolmen, which has the remains of its capstone fallen off the front of its side slabs.

Log Text: Sat in a field just beside the D.65 road to the northeast of the village of Varaire near to the Calvarie can be found the remains of this dolmen. It is 4 metres in length, by 1.5 metres wide and 1.5 metres high, with the long capstone broken into two pieces, facing eastwards at 074°. It has in the past been used as a shelter, and a bit of a wall has been built at the back, and the gap in the capstone covered over. As is often the case, there is a tree growing around it.

Log Text: This is a very high dolmen which can be found a hundred or so metres south of the GR.65 footpath besides the farm of the same name. Unfortunately one of the side slabs has been broken by a tree growing through it, and it has been dry stone walled at the back end at some time in the past to act as a shelter. The chamber would have been 2 metres long by 1.8 metres wide, and it is a good 2 metres in height, facing 115°, with a 4 metre by 4 metre capstone.

Joncas Dolmen

Log Text: A kilometre walk west of the village of Limogne-en-Quercy along the GR.65 long distance footpath and signposted, you come to this dolmen. Still sitting largely in its mound, the chamber is 3.5 metres long by 1.5 metres wide, facing to the east at 108°. The capstone is unfortunately broken, and only part remains covering the chamber.

When I was here, the surrounding area is covered in flowers of all shapes and colours, on a lovely warm sunny morning.

Log Text: Signposted as dolmens from the centre of the village of Limogne-en-Quercy, this dolmen is more than a kilometres walk along a trackway. The dolmen is still partly within its mound, and is notable for the thickness of its capstone, which is a rectangular 3 m by 2 m in size, but is a metre thick. The chamber is 2.5 metres by 1.5 metres in size, and opens to the southeast at 121°.

Unfortunately, there is quite a bit of rubbish here, with remains of fires, picnics and candles along with all the usual broken beer bottles.

Log Text: This dolmen can be easily found in a field beside the D24 road south of the village of Limogne-en-Quercy. Of typical size for round here, the chamber is 3.5 metres in length, and 1.5 metres wide, and is covered by a capstone which is larger in all dimensions. The northeast side has collapsed slightly, giving a good lean.

The dolmen is used for storing of some ancient farming equipment (ploughs and suchlike) which look to have been in there for many decades.

Log Text: Driving along a little lane to the north of Bois-del-Rey dolmens, I saw a little sign to dolmen, and so just had to follow it. A few hundred metres down a track into the forest from the small lane (with difficult parking) can be found the remains of this little dolmen, not much more than 2 metres long by 1.2 metres wide. There is still a bit of its surrounding mound remaining.

Log Text: A few more hundred metres round the signposted footpath is this dolmen with no name sign. Still in much of its long mound, the capstone is broken into three pieces, and partly fallen. The chamber is 3.5 metres long by 1.5 metres wide, and faces southeast at 125°.

Cloup de Layrou

Log Text: Just 50 metres further away from the Cloup de Layrou dolmen, is found a depression in the ground with a couple of cave like shelters. It has a signpost and was no doubt used by ancient man.

Log Text: A hundred or so metres further along the signposted walk from the Bois-del-Rey dolmen can be found the Dolmen de Bois-de-Galtier. This nice dolmen is still sitting within the remains of its mound, and has a 2.5 metre diameter round drystone walled chamber at its west end rather than the usual closing stone. It is probably a more recent shepherds hut been constructed here. The main dolmen, which acts as its entrance, is about 3.5 metres long by 1.5 metres wide, and faces east at 082°.

Log Text: Just a few dozen metres from the Bois-del-Rey dolmen, and thought to be connected in some way to it, can be found a 40 cm diameter 10 cm deep circular basin cut into a slab of rock, for unknown purpose.

Log Text: This is quite a nice dolmen but starting to deteriorate badly, supposedly mostly over the last 100 years. The 4 metre long by 3 metre wide capstone has now broken into two bits, still sitting on its two crumbling 4 metre long side supports. It has a nice backstone and remains of a front entry stone, with the chamber facing east at 110°. It is found a couple of hundred metres along a signposted footpath in a lovely oak forest.

Log Text: In the village of Salles-la-Source can be found this museum of Rouergue life. Amongst much old farming machinery and suchlike the museum has a prehistoric collection.

Log Text: Walking westwards along the ridge from Pérignagols dolmen, there are several other mounds which are passed, one of which can be seen to have a couple of large stones on the surface at the eastern end of a long oval shaped mound. Fantastic views, made all the more impressive by the approach of a massive rainstorm.

Log Text: This is a nice dolmen with a lovely shaped and pitted egg shaped capstone, about 4 metres by 4 metres sitting on the top of two three to four metre long side slabs. The chamber is a healthy 4 metres by 2 metres internal dimensions.

The dolmen is signposted up a track to the top of a little hill just to the north of Rodez airport runway, but the atmosphere here is spoiled a bit by all the road straightening and widening going on nearby. There are fantastic views from here across towards Rodez.
