10 stones remain on one side of a wall.
First stone on right is limestone the rest granite, this is found also at the Gamelands circle, Gunnerkeld and Iron Hill south a few metres away.

Log Text: Continuing on south and I park near the large flooded quarry, from where it’s a short walk uphill to the east to the top of Iron Hill. The northerly circle is a ring of stones surrounding a large round tumulus which is bisected by the field wall which runs right over the top of it. On the southern side, the circle of kerbstones is almost complete, but I could see nothing on the northern side, but couldnt gain access to have a close look.

After looking south over the wall, the stone row was found and extended some 400yards down to the river/beck across the fell?
20 yards to the west of Castlehowe circle lies a smaller circle of 1ft high granite boulders buried in the grass?
Is this stone row contemporary with the circles at Castlehowe??
or have the quarry re-instated this line? It looks interesting but any
thoughts on this complex please

Log Text: Just to the west of the stone circle is what appears to be another rubble cairn surrounded by low boulders, with what seems to be a row or avenue of stones running south down a little valley across the open land.

Ten stones form this small stone circle which is now huddled up against a drystone wall, in a field with a locked gate. On the other side of the wall, there appears to be a stone row.

Log Text: Onwards to Castlehowe Scar Stone Circle, my first new circle of the day. Easy parking beside the small lane running south, and its easy to see the circle just in the next field, but no entrance available today. It’s a small scruffy circle of large boulders, close to the field wall and with a cattle feeder placed inside it.

Log Text: Head out to the east of Shap, and the first stop is another Thunder Stone, this one an erratic perched just above a small old quarry, looming large on the skyline when approaching from the west.

Log Text: Back to the car, and this stone can be seen in front of the wall on the skyline to the northwest, beyond the first few fields. I decide I can go and get a closer look at it by driving up to the north and then walking down the little lane. There are two stones in the field by the wall here, the larger stone that I could see before, and also a smaller one.

Log Text: i drive through Shap and up the lanes to the northwest, finding somewhere to park, then just a little walk to the Goggleby Stone. Slightly disappointed to find it not so large as I had been thinking, and also very crudely concreted into the ground.

Log Text: After a pint at the Kings arms I decide I have enough time to have a look for many of the Shap stones. First off is the Giant's Foot, which is just across a field behind the house at the back of the pub. It’s a large flat stone.

Kemp Howe submitted by nicoladidsbury on 29th Mar 2004. This is the remains of what must have been a beautiful stone circle. The stones are pink granite and have a lovely glow. Unfortunately the ambience has been shattered by the "wonderful" victorians, who built the railway on top of it.

A quick look at Kemp Howe stone circle, but the field is closed off with livestock inside, so I satisfy myself with a look over the gate.

Log Text: After visiting the Thornborough Henges on my way back from Northumberland, I call in to the Bull Inn at West Tanfield for a pint, and notice that there is something marked at the local church. A very interesting old place with pele tower outside; I cannot look inside the church as there is building work going on, but outside in the churchyard, there is what looks like a very interesting and ancient cross shaft mounted on a block. Its obviously far older than anything else in the graveyard, but I see nothing written on or about it.

Log Text: With the drought of 2022 now exposing the stone circle in Tottiford reservoir, I went down for an exploration. In the southern part of the reservoir, is an obvious large mound, which is all sandy rather than dark mud covered. To the south of the mound, which is elongated in this direction, can be seen remains of a double stone row extending further south into the waters of the lake. It was too wet and muddy for me to get to any of the obviously remaining stones, and the water level of the reservoir was such that some of the stones were surrounded by water, and more could be seen further south and running below the water level. What stones I could see looked regularly spaced. On the sloping lakeshore, there are many large stones laying around, of which I have no doubt many have been removed here from the stone rows.

Log Text: With the drought of 2022 now exposing the stone circle in Tottiford reservoir for only the second time in 150 years, I went down for an exploration. In the southern part of the reservoir, below the footpath causeway bridge, can be seen a single row of stones progressing across the muddy lakebed in a westerly direction from the eastern shore. About 50 metres in length, several regularly spaced large stones can be seen. Trying to get close to the main part of the row, and to walk along its length proved futile, as the mud was very deep and wet. I saw nothing which really resembled a terminal cairn.

To the northeast of this mound is the remains of a stone sircle, and then further away a single stone row. To the south of the mound, which is elongated in this direction, can be seen remains of a double stone row extending further south into the waters of the lake. To the east of the mound, between it and the eastern shore, can be seen several round piles of stones, which may be ancient cairns, but I am not too convinced, as they look neither big enough, and seem strangely spaced and positioned in what would have been a wet position. Watching the Time Team program later and theyfound much mesolithic flint on the mound, suggesting it had been in use for millennia.

Log Text: To the east of the mound, between it and the eastern shore, can be seen several round piles of stones, which may be ancient cairns, but I am not too convinced, as they look neither big enough, and seem strangely spaced and positioned in what would have been a wet position. There seemes to be a fairly regularly spaced row of these stone piles along much of the eastern shoreline. Watching the Time Team program later and they showed that these were more likely relatively modern stone piles, possibly something to do with when the reservoir was being created.

Despite overnight storms making the lakebed very wet, slippery and muddy, I was able to walk to the circle, and around most of it. My footprints make out the circle relatively clearly.
I didn't make notes, and from memory I was able to identify about 10 stones in the mud. Just a quick forst photo uploaded from my phone. In time I will sort out what I have taken.

Despite getting very wet and muddy feet, and slipping several times, I managed to make it back to dry land without falling flat in the mud!
The northern single, and double southern stone rows were clear, but surrounded by too much wet mud to walk along them for any distance.
I was really pleased with myself for getting to visit this circle, as I never thought I would even see it, let alone be able to have a proper visit.

Log Text: With the drought of 2022 now exposing the stone circle in Tottiford reservoir for only the second time in 150 years, I went down for an exploration. Despite overnight storms making the lakebed very wet, slippery and muddy, I was able to walk to the circle, and around most of it.
In the southern part of the reservoir, below the footpath causeway bridge and to the northwest of the obvious lage dry mound, can be seen a few stones of a stone circle. I was able to get across the mud to the nearest stone, and once there it seemed that the circle was arranged around the outer edges of another smaller dry mound. I got to walk around most of the circumference of the circle without too much mud, and noted about 8 to 10 stones, which would have made up a decent circle with regularly spaced stones.
Trying to get across to the large dry mound I had no chance, as there was deep wet mud between the two, presumably an old river course separating the two, so I had to go back the way I had come across the mud from the eastern shore of the reservoir.
Despite getting very wet and muddy feet, and slipping several times, I managed to make it back to dry land without falling flat in the mud! I was really pleased with myself for getting to visit this circle, as I never thought I would even see it, let alone be able to have a proper visit.

Log Text: After struggling to find somewhere to eat, I really want to see Chun Quoit and Castle at sundown, so with a rapid drive, being guided by another force, I get to the bottom of the hill already in full shadow. Its almost 30 years since I last climbed the hill to visit the Chûn sites. A rapid walk up to the top, its a long way, and I get to the quoit just as it is in the golden glow of the sunset, but perhaps now past its best. Lots of photos, including the sun setting through the stones, then a quick look around the wonderful castle, and back down the hill to the car. Easy drive home with a fabulous full strawberry moon rising, and I am back to the cottage just before 11:00.
