Log Text: After struggling to find somewhere to eat, I really want to see Chun Quoit and Castle at sundown, so with a rapid drive, being guided by another force, I get to the bottom of the hill already in full shadow. Its almost 30 years since I last climbed the hill to visit the Chûn sites. A rapid walk up to the top, its a long way, and I get to the quoit just as it is in the golden glow of the sunset, but perhaps now past its best. Lots of photos, including the sun setting through the stones, then a quick look around the wonderful castle, and back down the hill to the car. Easy drive home with a fabulous full strawberry moon rising, and I am back to the cottage just before 11:00.

Log Text: Despite looking for this and not being able to find it the other year due to a wrong grid ref given, this stone is very easy to find, and I must have seen it many times. Not a large stone, it is engraved on one side with Newmans Corner.

This shot shows the huge but low (4.5ft - 1.4m) SE-facing doorway of the Carn Euny 'Beehive Hut' underground chamber, with its own short passage leading into the fogou passage which runs SW/NE, (but snaking here with a flatter, more W/E run), just outside the doorway. It is thought that the Beehive Hut (chamber) was the first structure on this site, so that originally the eastern wall of the fogou passage would not have obstructed the view. Log Text: I move on to Carn Euny village with its fantastic fogou, which has now had the round chamber covered, really magical. The remains of the village courtyard houses do not match up to the wonders of Chysauster, but this is more than made up for by the magic of the fogou.

Chapel Carn Brea Cairns submitted by Bladup on 19th Nov 2013. Stones of the kerb cairn at SW 38372806. It is 5.5m in diameter and is about 1.5m high on the lower, west side and 0.5m high on the east. The interior is earth filled to within 0.2m of the top of the inner kerb, of which three upright slabs can be detected. Five stones of the outer kerb can be seen.

Log Text: As it is such a lovely afternoon, I decided to climb Chapel Carn Brea hill with its cairns, and a fabulous view all the way around, the Isles of Scilly very clear out in the distance. Apart from the large hilltop cairn, there are clearly a couple of other cairns up here. First is an elongated stone structure on the southern hilltop, quite near to the modern firebeacon. It appears to have a kerb structure around a large chamber at the southern end. Secondly is an obvious cairn to the northwest of the hilltop, just downslope of the summit. It seems to have been a round cairn with internal chamber, which has been dug into in the past.

Log Text: As it is such a lovely afternoon, I decided to climb Chapel Carn Brea hill with its cairns, and a fabulous view all the way around, the Isles of Scilly very clear out in the distance. The main hilltop cairn is very large, but very difficult to make anything out properly as it has been very mutilated. Could it once have been a bit like Carn Gloose, with a large internal cairn surrounded by a ring, with at least one chamber?

Log Text: Go to Boscawen-Un stone circle to eat my crab sandwich. It is looking really magnificent in the sun, with all the wildflowers and I have it all to myself. Walking back to the car later there was a minibus full of people coming to visit, so that was timed just right.

Log Text: The easiest way to find this circle is to park in a small pull in beside the A30 just to the east of the stream crossing at Lower Leha farm, at SW410277. There is now a marked path running south from here, looked after by CASPN, as is the circle itself. Unlike when I last visited, the paths and circles were nicely cleared of gorse and bracken, and it was a pleasure to walk to it, unlike the fight through jungle I had a few years ago. The circle itself lies within a circular enclosure which has been built around it at some time in the past, no doubt to protect it from the farming, or to keep it special. What a wonderful circle this is, now looking beautiful in the morning sunlight, all cleared of the overgrowth. Nineteen stones, averaging just over a metre in height, make up a slightly squashed circle with diameter between 22 and 24 metres. There is an “entrance” gap at the west of the circle, and this space is too small for there to be a missing stone here. Near the centre of the circle is the beautifully leaning gnomon stone, about 2.5 metres in length, and leaning towards the northeast. This stone has obviously been shaped, and appears to have been deliberately set at this leaning angle. All except one of the stones of the circle are a pale granite, which sparkles in this low sunshine. There is however, one stone which is a large block of white quartz, which is positioned at the southwest of the circle. At the northeast of the circle are several other slabs of granite, which are thought to be the remains of a burial cist. It is thought that this circle was in full use right up until the Dark Ages, with references to it in ancient Welsh literature. It is beautiful. I love it here. And such a big improvement over the disappointment of my last visit when it was so overgrown. This really is a special place.

A lot of tidying work has been done around most of the houses, and some informative signs installed, along with a raised viewing area allowing a vision of the whole site. So fabulous to see this wonderful ancient village again.

Log Text: After an afternoon visiting Kynance Cove and Lizard Point, then dinner at the Witchball, it is getting late, and I want to go find the Dry Tree menhir beside Goonhilly Downs Earth Station. Park in the nature reserve car park and a lovely walk all around, to find the glorious mix of ancient standing stone and tumuli, juxtaposed beside all the hiTech tracking station dishes. Lovely in the setting sun.

Log Text: I want to stop for my pasty at the Piskeys Hall fogou, but it takes me several attempts to find it, and only then I have to climb over a gate into a thankfully empty field, but see nothing like any of the pictures I have seen. It must be over by the far edge of the field somewhere, but there's nothing obvious, just a very overgrown clump. Its all very overgrown, and at first I cannot find anything to see, but then I do see a stone lined entrance amongst the gorse and brambles which I am just about able to get to. Yes, I have found the main structure and am able to get down into it. This one seems more like a large entrance grave than the other fogous I have seen, but who am I to argue.

Log Text: A day down to The Lizard for a couple of fogous and the Verdant Brewery. Start with Halliggye Fogou, but found it hard to find in the Trelowarren Estate. After driving all around the estate, I found a place to park near the house, but could still find no obvious signs to the fogou despite it being in the care of EH. After a lot of walking and asking people, I eventually found it. The way back to the car was easier, and at a sort of back entrance to the carpark there was indeed a sign with a map showing the way to the fogou. Once you find the fogou, what a fabulous thing it is. It is set within a little tended area, and there is a plan of what to find underground. This does help to orientate yourself once in, but it is pitch black and a good torch is needed. My torch was not great, so I found myself stumbling about a bit! The way down into the fogou was narrow and damp, despite there being no rain for several days, then past some iron gates used to close the fogou to the public at certain times to protect the bats, then into the dark. Two long passages and two small creep passages, all in total darkness. In the further passage I had a couple of bats flying around, but disappointingly never got one in a picture. Magic.
