Kingston Russell Circle

Kingston Russell Circle submitted by TheCaptain on 22nd Apr 2004. Kingston Russell Stone Circle, Dorset, SY577878. View of this pleasant circle on a nice early evening, September 2003. It was good to be able to see the circle properly, as when I have visited here in years gone by, the field within which it lives has been used for crops. I seem to even remember struggling to see it through a field of maize one year.

Oxenham Arms

Oxenham Arms submitted by TheCaptain on 26th Apr 2004. Oxenham Arms, South Zeal, Devon SX651935. An enormous and magnificent menhir built into the wall of a tremendous pub on the main street in the village of South Zeal, Devon. In fact, the pub is believed to have been built by monks in the twelfth century around the menhir. As the pub website says "A very interesting part of the house is the small lounge behind the bar. In this room, set in the wall, is a monolith and the theory of archaeologists is that the monastic builders placed the...

Felton Hill Long Barrow T26

Felton Hill Long Barrow T26 submitted by TheCaptain on 26th Apr 2004. Felton Hill chambered Cairn, Somerset, ST516649. Having read the description of this site again, it became obvious that the described cairn was the oval barrow near to the west end of the common by the round house. So I went to have another look, with more determination to get pictures. This oval barrow is approx 20m by 15m, and has a north south axis. It is very overgrown, and as can be seen in the picture, lies right at the end of the runway of Bristol airport.

Brent Knoll Camp

Brent Knoll Camp submitted by TheCaptain on 27th Apr 2004. Brent Knoll Hillfort, Somerset. ST341510. Over the years the knoll has been sculpted and adapted my man for various uses. Bronze Age and Iron Age people set up forts and encampments on the summit which became a focus for religious activity. The Romans built a temple and fortifications there, and referred to the hill as “The Mount of Frogs”. Legend claims this hill to be the site of Mons Badonicus, with its King Arthur connections. The Anglo-Saxons made good use of the Knoll, and on its e...

Maes Knoll submitted by TheCaptain on 29th Apr 2004. Maes Knoll Hillfort, Norton Malreward, North Somerset, ST600660. The remains of this Iron age hillfort lie at the eastern end of the Dundry Hill ridge just to the south of Bristol. The hillfort consists of a fairly large flat open area, roughly triangular in shape, that has been fortified by ramparts and shaping of the steep sided hilltop around the northern, eastern and southwestern sides of the hill. The western end of the fort is made across a narrow neck of the ridge of high land, and co...

Ty-Isaf, Chambered Tomb in Powys, SO182290 At what is now the southern end of the mound remains is a large structure with slab sides and a flattened floor, which was possibly the remains of a large chamber and its passageway, the southern half of which has been destroyed. Further down the field, behind where this shot was taken from, and not on any remains of mound, was a large flat stone which looked to have once been a capstone. Penywyrlod submitted by TheCaptain on 12th May 2004. Penywyrlod, Chambered Tomb, Powys, SO151316 What a find this tomb is. Upon approaching the Cairn across the fields, the first thing that is seen is that there is a very big mound here. This is a massive stone built long barrow, over 50 metres long and 25 wide, and still at least 4 metres in height, on a northwest southeast axis. Quite how this can have only been “discovered” in 1972 is beyond me !

Twyn-y-Beddau, Round Barrow, Powys, SO241386 Seen here from the north, this once nice round barrow has the obligatory depressions in the top and various other lumps and bumps from attempts to rob or excavate it. Unfortunately, it has now become used by the 4 wheel drive morons to drive over. The whole barrow and surrounding area is now badly scarred with wheel marks and ruts.

Knowlton Great Barrow submitted by TheCaptain on 27th May 2004. Knowlton Great Barrow, Dorset, SU025100. Large tree covered mound, seen here from within the remaining church henge of the knowlton circles group. There seems to be some debate as to whether this is in fact a burial mound, or some form of viewing area, positioned as it is near to the henges at Knowlton. Aerial photos have shown lovely rings around this mound as crop marks during dry years.
