Log Text: I now walk south up the hill to the big slab which can be seen from afar. At its base is another smaller slab at right angles to it, and a few more bits and pieces around.

Log Text: In about what should be the middle of the stone row, past the cows and further on I find a sort of stone setting, which I think is what I have called Trehudreth Downs B stone setting. There is a sort of standing stone stump, with a few other bits arranged in a square around it, and is certainly not natural. Once home, looking in my Bodmin Moor survey, and I find it is included as a stone setting in there.

Log Text: A mixed weather forecast for today, and after some horrendous rain, it stops so I go for an extensive exploration of Trehudreth Down, with its standing stones and stone row. Apart from the standing stone to the south, nothing much is readily seen, so I resort to using my GPS, and eventually find a long fallen stone, possibly the northeastern end. I find about 5 more stumps and little stones spaced out in a southwestern direction, but then anything of the stone row is hard to find, and a large herd of cattle with their young, mean I keep away from much of the central part it. I pass well clear of the cows and further on I find a sort of stone setting, which I think is what I have called Trehudreth Downs B stone setting. Further west, and a see about half a dozen evenly spaced stones in a haphazard row descending the slope, which matches to the western end of the row on the map. Without seeing anything between the eastern and western ends, it wouldnt surprise me if it was two seperate rows, as the two ends do not really line up with each other.

Log Text: Its not too far from York, so I went for a look at the Devil's Arrows, which were easy to find. Despite a new housing estate now encroaching and the very nearby A1 and A1(M), these are still at large in fields and feel wild and free. All three stones are magnificent and monsters with interesting rainules running down them. Magnificent.

Log Text: A day to Scarborough from York, so made sure of a visit to this and Wetwang on the way. I was expecting to be slightly disappointed after all the French monster menhirs I have seen, but in actuality I was impressed. Its huge, and obviously well shaped. Only disappointment is the metal hat, and that its "caged" in the churchyard, rather than being wild and free. Also another small stone and cist grave in the corner of the churchyard. Lovely.

Log Text: I now try to walk south from the Beehive Hut along the marked bridleway beside the Dart, but its hard going, very rough and largely overgrown, I find it to be much easier higher up on the moorland. South over the top of Hartland Tor with good views south towards Bellever Tor and Roundy Park settlement clear on the other side of the river. Onwards down to the Dart again, through the Hartyland estate to Postbridge, having a look at the old clapper bridge before getting a pint of Jail Ale in the welcoming East Dart Hotel bar.

Log Text: Getting down from White Ridge to the river and Beehive Hut is a bit tricky finding the way through the gorse here where it is very rough and largely overgrown, but once down it was easy to find. A splendid little construction and seeing it makes me think I have been here before, possibly on one of those mega expeditions in the 1980's, or perhaps I am confusing it with some of the similar orries in the Ariege Pyrénées. I see my only other person out here on the moors today, well camouflaged and fishing in the Dart, no doubt illegally as he looks very sheepish and hesitant to say hello.

Log Text: After lunch on the top of White Ridge, I head westwards through some remnants of ancient settlements and a couple of cairns and down to the East Dart to find the Beehive Hut. The settlement remains are very sparse and scattered, but would no doubt show some form from the air. I found the cairn at the second attempt it again clearly showing as a green stony circle, no obvious hollow in the centre, but perhaps some remains of a stone surround.

White Ridge cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 30th May 2022. There is clearly a cairn up on top of White Ridge, given away not only by the green stony circle amongst all the pale strawgrass which is everywhere else, but it also has a hollow in the centre, where it has clearly been dug in the past.

A double row @ SX 6541 8165 167m lg descending the hill from a ruined 8m dia
cairn. 41 stones still show. The cairn is on the skyline when viewed from the
bottom of the row. The end of the row has no obvious termination. The
elevation of the cairn from the bottom of the row is 3 degrees. The true
azimuth of the row is 7 degrees giving a declination of 42. A trawl through
astronomical objects around Bronze Age times suggests that the star Arcturus
would graze the cair...

Log Text: From the Stannon Newtake cairn with cist, I head north to the boundary wall where it is indicated on the map that the south end of White Ridge stone row is to be found (before it was discovered to run much further down the hill, which I didn't know at the time). Using my GPS I found the correct spot, and saw a couple of possible stones, then looking back south into the newtake, I could see s cleared strip of land going right down to where the cairn I couldn't get to is situated. Walking northwards, I noticed a sort of pathway which I followed, and found a few small stones, then saw a couple standing out against the horizon, confirming I was walking along the line of the stone row. I followed this north up to the top cairn, which is very denuded, but has several stones which can be made out. I have seen the stone row described as "one of the least impressive stone rows on the moor", but it has a few decent sections, and I have visited much worse.

I later find out that the whole length of the White Ridge stone row has been cleared and links up with these stones, which are possibly the end of that long row.

Log Text: Walk north over Merripit Hill and on via Stannon Newtake to look for this cairn with cist, which is easily found. The cist is a bit overgrown and I can only see one side of it, but the surrounding semi circle of large stones is in fine condition.
