East Kennett longbarrow

East Kennett longbarrow submitted by Humbucker on 21st Nov 2017. East Kennet Longbarrow. Without the leaves on the trees you can appreciate just how big this longbarrow is!

Log Text: I should have gone a bit further up the road from East Kennet to get a view of the long barrow on the hillside. However, good views over to East Kennet longbarrow from the hills near West Kennet barrow.

Overton Hill barrow cemetery

Overton Hill barrow cemetery submitted by Humbucker on 26th Dec 2017. Overton Hill Barrow Cemetery. A fantastically atmospheric place to visit, especially during the winter months when most other visitors tend to stick to Avebury or The Ridgeway itself.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Good views of the barrows on Avebury Down from the Ridgeway, but I don’t take any photos. Get my hand scratched and stung as I try to get some decent blackberries, because the wind is blowing so strongly.

Bowerman's Nose

Bowerman's Nose

Bowerman's Nose submitted by Bladup on 25th Apr 2013. Bowerman's Nose.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Drive down from Hound Tor passing Bowerman's Nose, but the sun has now gone, so decide not to go out to the fabulous looking rock column. One for another time. The drive down this little road is splendid, part of it being gated (I'd forgotten the joys of gated roads!), part through a stream bed , some over open common and some through woodland.

Cranbrook Castle

Cranbrook Castle submitted by TheCaptain on 28th Feb 2019. Cranbrook Castle as seen from Butterdon Down
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Cranbrook Castle hillfort can be seen to the northwest of Butterdon Down. I decide that with it only being February, and with it getting dark by 5:00pm, I will not visit, but go for a pint in the Union Inn at Moretomhampstead before heading out to Houndtor.

Dolmen du Château de Pierrefitte

Dolmen du Château de Pierrefitte submitted by TheCaptain on 11th Aug 2011. It's difficult to get to see this dolmen, as it resides in the grounds of a big private chateau, and cannot be visited. But hold on, what is that I see through the gate in the woods to the left of the house?
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: It's difficult to get to see this dolmen, as it resides in the grounds of a big private chateau, and cannot be visited. However I was just able to catch a glimpse of it from the front gate of the house. It is in the parkland at the east side, with trees around it. It looks a nice tidy dolmen with capstone still in place.

Log Text: Long inhabited and fortified hilltop above the river Loire at Amboise.

Quincampoix Dolmen

Quincampoix Dolmen submitted by theCaptain on 3rd Apr 2012. Fenced off in a field to the south of the road can be seen the remains of the Quincampoix dolmen, about 80 metres distance.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: To the west of Summeray, a couple of kilometres along the D.28 road you will find Quincampoix farm. Fenced off in a field to the south of the road can be seen the remains of the Quincampoix dolmen, about 80 metres distance. There is no direct access to the stones, and indeed there are notices to keep people out. There are quite a few stones here amongst the horses, of what was obviously quite a substantial dolmen in the past.

Log Text: It is now possible to walk all the way up the Severn Estuary past the tidal pool, and through the ex nuclear power station. Looking out at the tidal pool at low tide, all sorts of lumpy bumpy bits can be seen below the wall, quite possibly the remains of the petrified forest.

Hawkesbury Knoll

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Seen up on the top of the Cotswold Edge during a hot and humid Friday afternoon 11k walk, north from Hawkesbury Upton to the monument, then down the Cotswold Edge to Inglestone Common, south to Hawkesbury Common and on to Horton Court before going back up the Cotswold Edge and along the Cotswold Way andd "Yellow Brick Road" to Hawkesbury and a pint at the Beaufort Arms afterwards.

Grosse Pierre d'Ymorville

Trip No.204  Entry No.253  Date Added: 6th Sep 2020
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: France (Centre:Eure-et-Loire (28))
Visited: Saw from a distance on 6th Aug 2005

Log Text: This stone is about 500 metres from the road, according to the map, but I could see nothing obvious. There are no features around to help find it, in the middle of this massive industrial farming area. Perhaps it is in a field of maize. Perhaps I saw a large stone in a field of stubble. All very frustrating. Onwards towards Chartres.

Log Text: I drove past these caves, without realising what significance they have. If I had realised, I would have visited.

Camp de la Justice Alignements

Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment Country: France (Bourgogne:Saône-et-Loire (71))
Visited: Saw from a distance on 4th Aug 2005. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 2

Camp de la Justice Alignements

Camp de la Justice Alignements submitted by thecaptain on 15th Sep 2006. These alignements are difficult to get to, across a railway and a couple of fields, but they can however be seen from the main road. There are a couple of large stones and at least three smaller stones in a line along in the hedge.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Just to the north of Autun, near a place called Orme, along the busy N.81 road, can be found the remnants of these alignements. They are difficult to get to, across a railway and a couple of fields, but they can however be seen from the main road. There are a couple of large stones and at least three smaller stonesin a line along in the hedge. Any more than that, I cannot say, as I couldnt get right to them to have a proper look.

Menhir de Villars

Menhir de Villars

Menhir de Villars submitted by ocdolmen on 20th Sep 2009. Site in Auvergne: Puy-de-Dôme (63) France: Villars menhir
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This little menhir, less than 2 metres tall, can be found in the hamlet of Villars, near to the lavoir in the village square. On the top of the menhir is mounted a curious cross with a carving of Christ on it. Again, I missed this only because I did not know of it. There were once three menhirs to be found in the commune of Orcines.

Thedes Menhir

Thedes menhir submitted by ocdolmen on 20th Sep 2009. Site in Auvergne: Puy-de-Dôme (63) France: Thedes menhir
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Approximately 2 metre tall menhir with an iron cross mounted on the top of it. It is to be found at the D.5 and D.90 road junction just to the west of the hamlet of Theddes, and is marked as a cross on the ign map. I must have driven right by it, perhaps twice.

Log Text: I thought that I perhaps saw this dolmen on its hillside position, but I could find nowhere to park, and saw no obvious way through the houses and fields to get to where I thought it was.

Log Text: Some stone slab remains at the base of a tree in the field the other side of the road.

Château-Larcher Dolmen

Trip No.204  Entry No.154  Date Added: 17th Aug 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Poitou:Vienne (86))
Visited: Saw from a distance on 20th Jul 2005

Log Text: While trying to find a campsite at Chateau Larcher, I saw lots of signposts to Dolmen. I tried to follow them, they pointed out of the town and then I could find no more. So this was another two dolmens not found on this very frustrating day. However, right outside the chateau, there is a big cross mounted on top of a sort of dolmen. I wonder if it is real. By the time I saw it, I had driven past, and there was nowhere to stop. Maybe thats another one I should have had.

Andillé Dolmen

Andillé dolmen

Andillé dolmen submitted by TheCaptain on 3rd Dec 2007. About 50 metres to the south of the road to the east of Andillé (Route de Dolmen), in a field of sweetcorn, I could just see the top of this dolmen. There was no obvious way of getting to it to have a proper look.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: About 50 metres to the south of the road (Route de Dolmen), in a field of sweetcorn, I could just see the top of this dolmen. There was no obvious way of getting to it to have a proper look, but it looks to be the remains of a little simple dolmen.
