Stoanerhof stones
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Standing Stones
Country: Austria
Visited: Yes on 20th Feb 2015

Stoanerhof stones submitted by theCaptain on 20th Feb 2015. To the southern side of the town of Mayrhofen, in the locality of Stoanerhof, a couple of large stones can be seen standing at the sides of various lanes between the farms and chalets. I only have pics of this one.
I have no idea whether they are ancient menhirs, but they don't look natural to me, and look to have been stood in their positions deliberately.

Sticklepath stone circle submitted by thecaptain on 25th Jan 2009. While clearing the data off my gps receiver before a trip to the Alps, I found this track of a walk from Belstone to Cosdon Hill last September on there, which I had never got round to download.
This is the track of my walk out to try and find more about the possible stone circle I found several years ago.
My car was parked at Belstone, top left, crossed the river Taw, and followed my gps up the northwest slopes of Cosdon Hill. Once I got there, I went south to find, and thus rule out, the...

Ste-Mère-Eglise Borne Gallo/Roman submitted by TheCaptain on 28th Jul 2011. In the main square around the outside of the church (with D-Day parachutist hanging from the tower) can be seen this tall stone column.
A small sign states that it is a Borne Gallo/Romaine, a marker stone of some kind.

Log Text: This statue-menhir is supposed to be found in the garden of the mill beside the river in the delightful village of Fraisse-sur-Agout. I take a walk all along the river, and there are two possibilities for the mill, but I could find nothing resembling a statue-menhir. There is a lovely little park by the river, with water machines and explanatory notices, lovely gardens, and a camping car spot nearby. Lovely.

Statue menhir de Picarel submitted by thecaptain on 1st Mar 2009. This finely shaped menhir stands over 2 metres tall, and looks out down the valley to the southwest.

Log Text: Going north along the D.169 road from the Col de la Bane to the south of Fraisse-sur-Agout, and at a large corner in the road is a little lane to the west signed to Haut Picarel. About 300 metres down this track, and into a wood, you will find the menhir beside the trackway.
This finely shaped menhir stands over 2 metres tall, and looks out down the valley to the southwest. The only obvious markings and carvings on the stone are relatively modern, a deep cut halfway up, and some circles in the upper part. The original statue-menhir carvings have become so faint as to be almost invisible these days, although 180 years ago, when this chap was first discovered, they were clear enough. With a lot of will power, I was able to make out its belt around the back, but nothing else, although the stone itself is very obviously shaped into the right form. It was very difficult to photograph, with the strong sunlight coming thought the trees creating dappled shadows on the stone.
Where I was parked up here, there was a lady sat in a field reading, with several dogs, in amongst a large flock of sheep and goats. I assume she was the shepherdess, as the dogs were not at all concerned, nor were the sheep.

Statue menhir de La Pomarède submitted by thecaptain on 12th Mar 2009. Right outside the tourist office at Fraisse-sur-Agout, next to a wall behind a big tree display thing, is the top 90 cm of this statue menhir which must have once been 2 metres tall.
It is very difficult to make out any markings, with it being in dark shadow and very moss covered.

In some woods, this gorgeous statue-menhir can be found beside the lane, and is about 1.3 metres tall, and beautifully shaped. And at last, I have found a statue-menhir where some of his features can be clearly seen. Belt, legs, shoulder strap "objet" and knife, and his arms coming down diagonally from his shoulders. There are maybe a couple of eyes, but I cant see much of a head though.

The ploughed field surrounding the barrow is eating away at it. The most recent ploughing must have taken a couple of feet from each end, with all the stones which formerly made up the mound being scattered across the field.

Log Text: I visited this barrow this afternoon. Its getting in a very poor state. The ploughed field surrounding it is eating away at the mound. The most recent ploughing must have taken a couple of feet from each end, with all the stones which formerly made up the mound being scattered across the field. And there is the remains of a massive dead tree which has died and pulled down lots more stone along one edge. I saw no sign of any chamber, but it was all covered with vegetation and rubble thrown onto it.

Log Text: I revisited this barrow March 2006. The field it is in has now been fenced, and a gate with parking area situated near to the barrow. The field is no longer ploughed, and looks to be made ready for livestock. The rubbish which was piled on top of the barrow has been cleared and it all looks nicely tidied up. Pity that so much of it has been recently lost to the surrounding field, but things look less bleak for the barrow. I saw no signs of any chambers.

Log Text: I revisited this barrow August 2015 to see what sort of state it is now in. What a disappointment and disgrace. The poor thinghas been shorn of all growth on it and looks to be much smaller than the pictures of 4clydesdale7 from 2011. It's no doubt slowly (or rapidly on a longbarrow lifespan timescale) just becoming a part of the field here and will soon be all gone.

Whatever, he was not thrown into the next field.
