Chipping Sodbury Stone Circle
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc
Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jan 2016

Chipping Sodbury Stone Circle submitted by TheCaptain on 1st Jan 2016. New Years Day 2016 has been a foul miserable dark and wet day, so in a small effort to get myself out of the house, thought I'd go and get a couple of pictures of this fairly new stone circle. I dont know when this was constructed, I only noticed it for the first time sometime last year; it seems fairly new and I assume the stones are from the local quarry.

Log Text: Despite being on the signposts of the megalithic walk, I could not find this 4 metre tall menhir and its fallen companions. The menhir is the only one now standing of a little alignment, the other stones small and fallen, but it is on private property which is probably why I missed it, despite a very long walk towards it from at least two directions.
Chun Castle

Chun Castle submitted by h_fenton on 28th Feb 2011. An almost vertical view of Chûn Castle, this photo is composed of 45 Kite Aerial photograph s that have been stitched together using Microsoft ICE, I think this image is slightly warped but it does give a good overview of Chûn Castle.
The bottom of the photograph is roughly north.

Log Text: After struggling to find somewhere to eat, I really want to see Chun Quoit and Castle at sundown, so with a rapid drive, being guided by another force, I get to the bottom of the hill already in full shadow. Its almost 30 years since I last climbed the hill to visit the Chûn sites. A rapid walk up to the top, its a long way, and I get to the quoit just as it is in the golden glow of the sunset, but perhaps now past its best. Lots of photos, including the sun setting through the stones, then a quick look around the wonderful castle, and back down the hill to the car. Easy drive home with a fabulous full strawberry moon rising, and I am back to the cottage just before 11:00.

Churchyard Cross St Levan submitted by JimChampion on 29th Aug 2008. On the right, the tall churchyard cross; beyond and to the left the split St Levan Stone. I have read suggestions that the stone represents the female form and the cross represents the male form, or that the proximity of the Christian cross neutralises the pagan influence of the stone.

Log Text: Onwards to St Levan's church, and have a good look around the interesting churchyard, with several old crosses and cross heads to be seen here. Dropping down from the fields into St Levan's church, there is a really interesting stone entrance to the churchyard, with a coffin shaped stone surrounded by what appear to be granite seats, and a round crosshead. The tall St Levan's cross is positioned in the churchyard outside the church entrance, and near to the split St Levan's stone. The more interesting western face was in deep shadow, and did not come out well in my pictures.

Log Text: Day down to Penwith and start with a visit to Chysauster, which is looking magnificent on this bluesky morning, I just love it with all the wildflowers out. A lot of tidying work has been done around most of the houses, and some informative signs installed, along with a raised viewing area allowing a vision of the whole site. So fabulous to see this wonderful ancient village again.

Only 2 roofing lintels remain of this fogou associated with Chysauster Courtyard House village. The English Heritage response to the cost of restoration is sadly predictable.

Once in the site, over to the right hand side is the fogou, sadly fenced off and said to be unsafe, as it was when I came here in the 1980's. Shame it cant be made accessible.

Five stones in a very small circle with a diameter of 13ft.
The Druids` Circle is on the horizon on the left.

Log Text: Next up is the snappily named Circle 275, which is to the south of the trackway in the long grass and heather. This is a lovely little circle of five stones with diameter about 3 metres, and in a most gorgeous setting with views out over the sea and up to the hills with the druids circle visible on the skyline. Is that a spiral carving I see on one of the stones?

Log Text: From the main road passing the village of Rogues, take the dirt track leading northwest from near the electrical transformer, opposite the road to the village. After 300 metres walking down this track, there is a little mound on the right side, of which the centre has been dug out. Inside can be seen the slab stone remains of a central burial cist. Probably never a full dolmen, but maybe a later iron age burial. None of the slabs are more than 50cm in length.

Log Text: A 2.5 to 3 metre tall menhir in a splendid position near the l’Ernée river below a lovely castle/chateau on top of a bluebell filled wooded hillock. It looks as if the top may have been broken off. There are several other large blocks of stone around I wonder if this was once a large boulder that fell from the sort of tor that the chateau is built on that was modified into a menhir.

Clyro Court submitted by thecaptain on 14th May 2004. Clyro Court, Chambered Tomb, Powys, SO213432
Marked on the OS map as Chambered Long Cairn, the ruined remains of this tomb can be seen on a little hillock behind a house, beside the busy A438, overlooking the valley of the River Wye at Clyro, just over the river from Hay-on-Wye.
The remains of the tomb can be seen here from the northwest, and are the usual lumpy ground on top of the hillock. What looks like the remains of a stone chamber can be seen sticking out of the ground in the middl...
