Log Text: Having failed to get dinner at The Barge Inn, we got sandwiches in Marlborough, and then went and sat up on top of WKLB to eat them in the lovely sunshine, overlooking Silbury Hill and Avebury. Its lovely up here. But, there are always nutters about, banging drums, dowsing, tealights etc. What a shame the place has to put up with this.

Log Text: Decided to go find The Polisher on a wonderful sunny day to see if my legs were working again. Parked at Avebury, then walked up the Herepath to The Ridgeway, and turned north. Found the polisher too easily, and had lunch sat on it. Legs working well after the first chiro session, so continued north up the Ridgeway before turning to drop down off the hills and back to Avebury via some tumuli, but had to go a longer way due to a field of inquisitive bullocks. Back to Avebury and walked around the henge and stones before a pint in the Red Lion. Still fairly early and legs feeling good, so walked down the route of the Beckhampton Avenue to Adam and Eve and a huge longbarrow before going back To Avebury and the car. Drove via Silbury to the Kennet Avenue, and walked up and down that, finding the second polisher stone. Beautiful day ouy.

Log Text: The electric at home is off for the day so they can cut some trees, so I have a trip to Avebury for a long walk up to the polisher, down the Ridgeway and back to Avebury via Overton Down, East Kennet, West Kennet longbarrow, Silbury Hill, Waden Hill and the Avenue. Well deserved pint at the Red Lion. Beautiful day out.

Log Text: Walking up Green Street to the ridgeway, there are good view of the plentiful barrows dotted about on the hillsides. I am passed several times by a chap who is walking quicker than me, but stops for lots of photos.

Log Text: Yes indeed, the chap in the black fleece has gone to the polisher, and is taking all sorts of photos. I sit and wait halfway down the hill, but may still be in some of his pictures. He moves on downhill, and I see him busily taking lots of pictures of some of the stones. I take my chance and go have a good look at the polisher. Fabulous. After my 5 minutes here I walk back up to the Ridgeway and stop for a sit down and to collect my thoughts etc. noticing that the bloke in the black fleece has moved back up to the Polisher. He must have moved away to let me have my visit. As I walk on south I notice he is following behind me, but heads back towards Avebury, so was obviously only on a mission to the Polisher.

Log Text: Over the A4 to the Sanctuary, perhaps I can sit and have lunch here, but the circle of concrete breezeblocks has a couple of alternative types sat in the centre and dinging little bells. Couple of photos and move on.

Log Text: Walking along the fields beside the stream, get clear views of Silbaby mound, recently declared to be not prehistoric but medieval, and officially named The Waden Mound. There is a dead tree in front of it with a large hollow near the top which makes it look like an owl from a distance.

Log Text: Up the hill across the fields to West Kennet longbarrow. Its bright and clear but very windy up here, which gives good views all around. A steady stream of people are coming up here for a look, but not enough to get in the way. As I suspect is often the case, there is quite a bit of tat and suchlike inside, put there by people who should know better.

Log Text: Good views of Silbury today, so I decide to walk to it along the path in the fields north of the busy A4 road. It looks lovely in this light, sometimes in the sunshine and sometimes in the shade. With the bright green grass of the fields blowing around in the wind, it looks to be floating in a sea of green. Beautiful, and strangely compelling. From here I walk towards Avebury along the stream, but see people walking over Waden Hill, so decide to go over that and down to the Avenue, so as to approach Avebury along the West Kennet Avenue. There are fabulous views of Silbury Hill in its plain from up here, probably the best views of it there are to be had.

Marden Henge

Marden Henge is the biggest henge in England but because it did not have a stone circle associated with it, has tended to be overlooked. A huge mound, like a smaller version of Silbury Hill, named Hatfield Barrow, once existed within the henge, but it was levelled in the 19th C.
Foundations have been excavated within the henge that could have been a Neolithic sauna, containing a sunken hearth that would have given out intense heat.
