Site Type: Cave or Rock Shelter
Country: Croatia
Visited: Yes on 30th Sep 2004

Zmajeva Spilja submitted by thecaptain on 30th Sep 2004. On the southern slopes of Brac Island are many caves, several of which have evidence of occupation dating back to Neolithic times. To the west of the town of Bol can be seen the Zmajeva Spilja cave, above the fertile lands no doubt farmed for many thousands of years.

Log Text: I don’t quite know how I have never been to visit this before, and it takes a bit of finding, despite the fact it can be seen from a long way away on the hilltop, the problem is finding a path through the chest high gorse and brambles which takes you to it. I eventually got to it from Sperris Quoit via several long zig zag pathways, probably walking three times the distance to it as would be how the chough flies ! Wow, this is a big old thing, far bigger than I was expecting. Makes me wonder what it was all like originally, before part of it was destroyed, the capstone fell and the other alterations. This is a lovely spot up here, lots of blue scabious? flowering all around, birds singing and insects buzzing. I try a few “arty” pictures using the shadows and gaps in the stones.
Zennor Churchyard Crosses
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Ancient Cross
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 18th Dec 2012

Zennor Churchyard Crosses submitted by theCaptain on 18th Dec 2012. Not strictly speaking megalithic, but while at Zennor it would be almost criminal not to pay your respects to the Mermaid.
Within St Senara's church, the Mermaid on her small pew is now carefully displayed, with the daylight of a big south window lighting her up. Tremendous.
The church notes suggest it is of medieval origin, more than 600 years old.

Log Text: After a day at St Ives, I go to Zennor to pay my respects to the Mermaid. Whilst at the church, I have a look at the various ancient crosses in and around the churchyard, and Borlase's grave. How fabulous is that mermaid chair.

Log Text: Yes Tor is looking good to the north, and it's easily reached, with it's trig point atop a nice rocky outcrop, and although windy, the weather seems to be improving. Now to find the way down, and it's through rough slopes to the west with no semblance of a path. Just below the summit there is a large ring of stones, the messed about remains of a large cairn with massive stony banks. I didn't spend much time investigating, as by now I just wanted to get down from up here.

What an amazing site this is. On gently sloping hillside facing Sheepstor can be found this tremendous fourfold stone circle, about 20 minutes boggy walk from parking near what is known as the Scout Hut.
I found it impossible to get any photographs which do any justice to this site.

Yar Tor Summit submitted by AngieLake on 8th Mar 2005. Yar Tor Summit Cairn sits at 416m, overlooking a beautiful area of mid-Dartmoor. This view is of the approach from the south.

Log Text: Such a lovely day, I decided to go up to the top of Yar Tor to take in the views, despite my legs aching a bit by now. The top of the southern part of the tor has a clear ancient cairn built on top, but this has been made into a spiral shape, I believe during wartime when it was used as a lookout shelter. While stood at the top of Yar Tor, a couple of Wokka-Wokkas flew up the Dart valley below me before heading up the valley towards Princetown and over the moor. Strange to see them from above!

Visited: Yes on 11th Apr 2019. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 3
Yar Tor SE submitted by TheCaptain on 6th May 2019. The Yar Tor triple stone row is much clearer to see than I remember it being decades ago, when I can barely remember finding much at all.
Almost certainly what has become known as the Yar Tor SE rows is a section of the main triple row which has become separated from the main part of the rows.
Looking all aound at the top end, by the moneypit cairn, I could find nothing of another set of rows, but I didn't spend too long looking and the gorse here was vicious!

Yar Tor NW submitted by TheCaptain on 6th May 2019. The Yar Tor triple stone row is much clearer to see than I remember it being decades ago, when I can barely remember finding much at all. This has been helped by a lot of clearance of gorse etc.
This is a view near the upper end, where the stones start to be visible again, seperated from the top section which may or may not be the rows referred to as Yar Tor SE.

This has been helped by a lot of clearance of gorse etc. I followed the ruined triple row downhill to the north, and was pretty sure I could make out remnants of it right up to the field wall at SX67977427, further than I have seen mentioned anywhere else.

Woolacombe Memorial submitted by theCaptain on 4th Jan 2015. Closer inspection reveals this to be a memorial to the American soldiers of the second World War who were based in this area in the build up to D-Day, using the beaches of Woolacombe and nearby Saunton to practise their invasion techniques.

Site Type: Multiple Stone Rows / Avenue
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 21st Apr 2008

Woodbarrow Stone Setting submitted by thecaptain on 21st Apr 2008. It is possible that what I found is the remains of two rows, or perhaps even the remains of an Exmoor six-pack, the two rows being about 7 metres apart.
One fallen stone in the foreground, another leaning stone is in the clump of long growth mid picture.

Visited: Yes on 19th Mar 2008

Woodbarrow Hangings submitted by thecaptain on 19th Mar 2008. Somewhere here is a stone setting, which is a rarity that merits a mention on the little local maps which are attached to several of the gates around here.
I had a very good look around but could find nothing at all. Either it is all well hidden under the long reed grass which is growing all around here, or perhaps has all been broken and destroyed like many other Exmoor stone settings.

Visited: Yes on 19th Mar 2008

Woodbarrow (Exmoor) submitted by thecaptain on 19th Mar 2008. This is another large round barrow high up on Exmoor which is still in a good condition, although a very well used trackway runs past it just to its eastern side.
As usual it has been dug into from the top, there is a very marsh and boggy remains of a ditch running around the outside.

Visited: Yes on 19th Nov 2006
Withypool Hill Barrow submitted by thecaptain on 19th Nov 2006. This is large 25 metre diameter round barrow on the top of Withypool Hill. It’s been much dug about in the middle but is still well over a metre high.
The outside circumference is still in very good condition, and almost looks like it had a ditch and outer bank around it originally.
