Culverwell Mesolithic Site submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Nov 2003. Culverwell Mesolithic Site
I tried visiting this site on Saturday 1st November, but unfortunately was not able to gain access inside the main 'log cabin' part.
I telephoned the number placed on the site (01305 861 576), and was greeted by a pleasant, well spoken lady. She was reticent to open up just for me, and also there had been recent heavy rain which she feared might adversely affect the site when combined with feet.
She advised me to try again next time I'm in Dorset - which gives...

Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 3rd Nov 2003
Poundbury submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Nov 2003. A distant view of Poundbury Hill Fort SY683912, from the car park next to the Dorset & Devon military museum (imposing castle next to the road on the E side of Dorchester centre) , about 5 minutes walk from the County Museum.
Time did not permit me to visit this fort in person, but I was well chuffed when I got out the car to see some embankments to my NW.
Finds and details of what is at Poundury are at the County Museum.

Broadmayne Bank Barrow

Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 3rd Nov 2003

Broadmayne Bank Barrow submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Nov 2003. Came Wood Barrow Cemetery (SY699855)
This cemetery extends from the wood, across the hill top, with a glorious view to the coast, including Chalbury Hill Fort, and the impressive Bincombe Barrows.
This picture is taken on top of only one of three bank barrows (all in Dorset) with two round barrows to the left (N); the barrows go from behind the camera through the fields and into the wood.

Little Mayne
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 5th Nov 2003

Little Mayne submitted by TimPrevett on 5th Nov 2003. Right. I had to look in to this one; again - another place I have passed hundreds of times, right near the road. I had a short amount of time - so believing I had seen stones on the N side of the road on previous passings, I investigated there. I found a cluster of stones, most certainly once part of some feature, clustered under some trees in the corner of a field (ref. SY 723 871), and observed a stone in a field to the east (ref SY 724 870). The following day I obtained my copy of Peter Knigh...

The Wrekin submitted by TimPrevett on 16th Nov 2003. SJ630083 The Wrekin; atop this monster of a hill which dominates the landscape between Shrewsbury & Telford, are some remains of a hillfort. A spectacular location. We went up the Wrekin on Christmas Day one year - and got caught in a snowstorm at the top! This picture taken from Corbet Wood SJ525237, which gives commanding views across the hills to the south.

Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 19th Nov 2003
Caer Caradoc (Church Stretton) submitted by TimPrevett on 19th Nov 2003. To give an idea of the steepness of the ascent / descent (at times) of this Caer Caradoc; I sweated buckets going up this hill, and the long jolting, sliding descent made my legs feel like jelly when I at last reached level ground! This was taken looking N on the W side before the fog enveloped me and the hill!

Castle Hill (Shropshire)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 19th Nov 2003
Castle Hill (Shropshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 19th Nov 2003. SO461959; lovely views to the E to Caer Caradoc, and NE to The Wrekin. What may remain of ramparts is probably underneath fern, fireweed, and brambles. It has been argued to be a defended Iron Age settlement, shorn up on 3 sides by human efforts, defining an area about 60 by 90 feet. A ditch and bank is supposed to be visible on the W. This view is looking towards Church Stretton and really is all there about to be seen; though it is a pleasant location. The nearby 1902 church of St Michael & Al...

Robin Hood's Tump
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Cheshire)
Visited: Yes on 26th Nov 2003
Robin Hood's Tump submitted by TimPrevett on 26th Nov 2003. Robin Hood's Tump SJ575599 - the remains of a bowl or round barrow (National Monuments Record gives it as a bowl barrow), over a possible settlement, not far off the A51 near Tilstone Fearnall.
The access was surprisingly good - on a very wide corner, giving plenty of space for unobtrustive parking. Largely unremarkable, given no burials have been found here, but as I have spent longer, and searched harder trying to find much less, this was a rewarding bump to find!
Given the heavy tree ...

Site Type: Museum
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 13th Dec 2003
Secret Hills Discovery Centre submitted by TimPrevett on 13th Dec 2003. SO435825. This impressive exhibition is a millenium project worth singing about. A museum to demonstrate the wonders of an outstanding area of England so little known about. Hence the secret hills bit.
This covers archaeology, geology, wildlife, folklore, and local arts & crafts.
The full size skeleton of the Condover Mammoth is there to worry or delight children!
Of interest to the megarak is much on lumps & bumps in the area; a simulated balloon ride of many of the hillforts in the a...

Whittington Castle
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Artificial Mound
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 16th Dec 2003
Whittington Castle submitted by TimPrevett on 16th Dec 2003. SJ 325313. A barrow-like mound (possibly re-used barrow) at Whittington Castle - not disimilar from ones at Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire, or Boscobel House further east in Shropshire, near the Staffs border. A woman we spoke with here said that soil-core tests done here date contemporary with Old Oswestry Hillfort; she was adamant that the inhabitants of the fort actually dwellt here, and only moved to the fort in times of threat.

Parsley Hay
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Round Cairn
Country: England (Derbyshire)
Visited: Yes on 17th Dec 2003
Parsley Hay submitted by TimPrevett on 17th Dec 2003. Parsley Hay Round Cairn SK144631. The remains of this cairn are visible, and even some kerb stones show around the perimeter of the mound. Be careful! When we visited, a herd of frisky young bullocks followed us with great curiosity, and were it not for Jez's excellent communication skills with such animals, we might have been trampled...! This was a risky visit. Thanks Jez ;-)
