Gop Caves
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Cave or Rock Shelter
Country: Wales (Flintshire)
Visited: Yes on 19th Feb 2004
Gop Caves submitted by TimPrevett on 19th Feb 2004. The Gop Caves are surprisingly close to The Gop Cairn, from which they can be accessed. Discovered in 1886-7, the caves recess some way into the limestone of Gop Hill. On top of evidence of hyaena activity during the last Ice Age, a square enclosure had been constructed, enclosed by rubble, and contained the remains of at last 14 humans, dating across the Neolithic. Evidence of burning at high temperatures was found nearby. Usage of the caves continued for some time, with an additional 6 burial...

Cefn Coch (Penmaenmawr)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Ring Cairn
Country: Wales (Conwy)
Visited: Yes on 7th Apr 2004
Cefn Coch (Penmaenmawr) submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Apr 2004. This Circle is easily missed. As it is usually approached from Druids' Circle, it is not visible until you actually go over a slight rise just SW of the neighbouring Moelfre Stone Row / Alignment which can be mistaken as 278.
When reading descriptions of Circle 278 as a wide circular rubble bank, with fallen uprights, then coming across this (which I have missed on 2 previous visits to this area), it is unmistakeably Circle 278.
This is looking to the North East from the bank of Circle 278...

Penbedw Park Standing Stone
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: Wales (Flintshire)
Visited: Yes on 7th Apr 2004
Penbedw Park Standing Stone submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Apr 2004. This stone serves as the likely outlier to the Penbedw Park Circle.
It is a very large, almost square but rounded sides stone, and is intervisible from the circle, and tumulus.
Permission must be obtained before visiting, as it is on private park land.
The circle is behind the tree in the centre of the picture.

Penbedw Park Tumulus
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: Wales (Flintshire)
Visited: Yes on 7th Apr 2004
Penbedw Park Tumulus submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Apr 2004. The Penbedw Park Tumulus as seen from one of the stones of the circle.
It also shows the clear surplanting of trees, to replace stones to complete a sense of the ring.
Burl reports on some who were digging the tumulus to see what could be found, and were warned that they would be haunted by the spirits of the dead who dwellt there.
Permission must be obtained before visiting, as it is on private park land.

Bodowyr submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Apr 2004. Scorching under the capstone of the lovely Bodowyr Dolmen. Another prime example of how *not* to treat an ancient monument.

Druids Circle (Penmaenmawr)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Wales (Conwy)
Visited: Yes on 8th Apr 2004
Druids Circle (Penmaenmawr) submitted by TimPrevett on 8th Apr 2004. When visiting Druids Circle, be prepared for the worst weather.
Of the three times I have visited, the first two were the worst rain and wind I have ever experienced at any monument. Gratitude for warm weatherproof clothing was plentiful.
Last week's visit (start of April) was the best for weather. There had been a short sharp shower, but the clouds showed their clear intent for something more, so I took this shot as we chose to depart.
It is looking to the southwest, from the east side...

Cors Y Carneddau
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Wales (Conwy)
Visited: Yes on 8th Apr 2004
Cors Y Carneddau submitted by TimPrevett on 8th Apr 2004. Cors Y Carneddau Circle
All that remains of this circle is an arc of stones curving towards the inverted "Y" shape of a wall field boundary to its immediate north. It is this same wall that helps to locate the circle in relation to an otherwise open mountainside and moor. Some may see it not as a circle, but as a rather fortuitous arrangement of boulders, but the guidebooks remain open minded.

Graig Lwyd Neolithic Axe Factory
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Ancient Mine, Quarry or other Industry
Country: Wales (Conwy)
Visited: Yes on 8th Apr 2004
Graig Lwyd Neolithic Axe Factory submitted by TimPrevett on 8th Apr 2004. Graig Lwyd Neolithic Axe Factory sits on the extinct volcano above the North Wales coastal town of Penmaenmawr. Spectacular views abound, with panoramic views to the Tal Y Fan mountain to the south, the Great Orme to the east, and Anglesey to the west.
Access is questionable; the 'volcanic plug' from which was taken microdiorite or augite granophyre is on top of a ridge which is still being quarried on its east and north sides for rocks of different geological specifications. The outcrop can ...

Maen Addwyn
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: Wales (Anglesey)
Visited: Yes on 9th Apr 2004
Maen Addwyn submitted by TimPrevett on 9th Apr 2004. This impressive sized menhir sits in the field boundary adjacent a road, opposite a school, which out of school hours makes handy parking for viewing the stone.
Mynydd Bodafon is visible to the north west, otherwise flat fields are visible in all directions.
The stone is being encroached upon by the spread of ivy. My last visit (actually 15th June 1999) showed relatively little ivy on the stone; by April 2004 the growth was much more significant.

Beeston Castle
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Cheshire)
Visited: Yes on 13th Apr 2004
Beeston Castle submitted by TimPrevett on 13th Apr 2004. The remains of the prehistoric hillfort are very hard to detect; the place they are most in evidence are either side of the gatehouse to the outer bailey. This is either side of the main route to the top of the mediaeval castle.
Some of the medieaval walls were actually built using existing earthworks from the earlier fortification to aid defence. These earthworks are most in evidence when the foliage is low.
This picture is taken on the north east side of the entrance, which is on the rig...

Holyhead Mountain
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: Wales (Anglesey)
Visited: Yes on 14th Apr 2004
Holyhead Mountain submitted by TimPrevett on 14th Apr 2004. At the base of Holyhead Mountain, is this impressive, substantial group of hut circles. In the 1860s in excess of 50 buildings were recorded, but now numbers around 20.
Active settlement was on this location for sometime, and not all the remains seen are contemporary with each other.
Finds at this location, and very nearby, date occupation from mesolithic to Romano British times.
The hut circles seen are obvious, but there are a number of square features. The guidebook likens them to s...

Caer Leb
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: Wales (Anglesey)
Visited: Yes on 14th Apr 2004
Caer Leb submitted by TimPrevett on 14th Apr 2004. Caer Leb is a rectilinear settlement enclosure, with double ditches and banks defining an area 200 feet by 160 feet. Some have interpreted it as a mediaeval homestead with moat (indeed, some of the ditches get very water logged). However, finds of a 3rd Century AD brooch, a 4th Century denarius of Postumus, and Roman pottery and quernstones date the site much earlier than mediaeval. Like the Din Lligwy Settlement, the CADW guidebook says it possibly has its origins earlier than the 3rd Century, ...

Country: Wales (Anglesey)
Visited: Yes on 14th Apr 2004
Penrhos-Feilw submitted by TimPrevett on 14th Apr 2004. We were not alone when visiting these prehistoric goalposts; we were soon joined by two of three horses in the field.
They were very curious, and thankfully added a pleasant dynamic to the visit; the seasoned megarak, I am sure, can recount less pleasant close encounters with livestock in fields.

Rowen Hut Circles

Visited: Yes on 14th Apr 2004
Rowen Hut Circles submitted by TimPrevett on 14th Apr 2004. One of three hut circles adjoining this lane, this at SH735717.
A large circular feature, marked on the map as "homestead", further listed as hut circle on CARN, dating from Iron Age to the Roman Period. In the north west corner, there is an additional circular feature. This lies a very short way indeed from the Cae Coch Menhir.
This is the view of the north east side.

If ever there was an adeqaute crossover for hobbies or interests, lichens and stones must be a contender!
Rob F, Baz, Elaine, Eileen and Stevie are the first in there.
