Bwlch y Ddeufaen

Bwlch y Ddeufaen

Bwlch y Ddeufaen submitted by Tom_Bullock on 23rd Oct 2006. The OS Map shows 'Cairns' and 'Standing Stones' at these coordinates. There are reportedly two standing stones, 10- and 6-feet tall, in a NW-SE alignment at this location. There is some confusion about this site: Burl does not list it in his book on Circles. The 10-foot stone is located at these coordinates, and has a companion stone located closeby.

Maen Penddu

Maen Penddu submitted by Tom_Bullock on 23rd Oct 2006. The OS Map shows 'Standing Stone' close to these coordinates. According to one visitor, the ring has absurdly small stones, no higher than 1-foot, and easily lost under the bilberry and heather. Located just NW of the Maen Penddu standing stone, it is situated on a flat area, just beneath the highest terrain. After a long trek up and across some dramatic landscape, I was disappointed not to find evidence of the reported stone circle at the supplied coordinates. There are quite a few stones in th...

Preseb y Fawch Frech

Preseb y Fawch Frech submitted by Tom_Bullock on 24th Oct 2006. The OS Map shows nothing at these coordinates. The coordinates place the site within an impenetrable, dense forest within 100m of an access road. I did not even attempt to search for stones.

Gwastadgoed submitted by Tom_Bullock on 24th Oct 2006. According to the www.megalithic.co.uk site, there are two standing stones at this site, which is what I found there. The stone at the N is 3–feet tall, while that at the N, 30 feet away, is 5–feet tall.

Capel Hiraethog III

Capel Hiraethog III submitted by Tom_Bullock on 24th Oct 2006. The OS Map shows 'Tumulus' at these coordinates. The coordinates place the site in the middle of a roadway in the middle of a forest plantation. I found nothing that resembled a Tumulus as shown on the OS Map, nor a round barrow that is indicated on the www.megalithic.co.uk website.

Pen-Y-Stryd

Pen-Y-Stryd submitted by Tom_Bullock on 24th Oct 2006. The OS Map shows nothing at these coordinates. Burl lists this circle as ruined but recognizable in his Stone Circle Gazetteer (2000). I don't think so, at least not at the provided coordinates. There are some scattered stones amidst the tall grass, but I can only make out an arrangement if I desparately need to find one to justify the time, effort and cost of getting there.

Y Capel

Y Capel submitted by Tom_Bullock on 24th Oct 2006. The OS Map shows a 'Stone Circle' at these coordinates. The stones forming this 82–foot diameter circle are small, the tallest being 2–feet and located at the N. Some of them are at ground level or merely stubs. But they are sited atop a small hillock providing fine views of the surrounding countryside. Although the stones themselves cannot be seen from a distance along the long approach, the tall grass clumps adjacent to the stones are a good marker for identifying and navigating to the sit...

Hafodty submitted by Tom_Bullock on 24th Oct 2006. The OS Map shows 'Stone Circle' at these coordinates. Only three stones forming the S arc of what was a 36–foot diameter circle survive at this site. They are 4–, 2– and 2–feet tall.

Moel Goedog E

Moel Goedog E submitted by Tom_Bullock on 24th Oct 2006. The OS Map shows 'Cairn Circles' at these coordinates. Two cairn circles stand within 160 feet of one another, generally sited E–W of one another. The one at the coordinates consists of shoulder–to–shoulder stones in a circle, as does the one to the W at SN61013245. The latter appears to have several standing stones external to those in the ring and that form a circle around them. The tallest stones are about 2–feet high.

Burford Down Stone Row

Burford Down Stone Row submitted by Tom_Bullock on 9th Jul 2002. The Burford Down stone row, one of the finest in Dartmoor, shows evidence of recent damage by whatever farmer is running huge tractors across the fields. S(he) has been driving right through the rows (perpendicular to them) along several tracks. I saw evidence of at least 3 stones that had been dislodged and pushed aside by the wheels of the tractor. I don't know if there is a procedure for reporting such damage, or even if the farmer is liable for such damage. I have never, in my 12 year...
