Merrivale SW row 3

Merrivale SW row 3 submitted by AngieLake on 29th Oct 2004. In the foreground, Merrivale Single Row 3 (see thecaptain's overview plan) at sunset on 21st September, the day before the Autumn Equinox, 2004. In the distance, in the glare of the setting sun, can be seen the two west end stones of the southern row. Two other taller stones on the south side of that southern row are also visible above centre, and to right of pic. ('Thecaptain' has a theory that these, and other taller stones in the rows, align with the menhir at certain times of the year.) T...

Île Carn cairn

Île Carn cairn submitted by theCaptain on 19th Apr 2014. Ile Carn, central and right hand chamber entrances. Unfortunately, being close up to the carn and it is difficult to get a good full view of the front face. My attempt to stich several pictures have so far failed using ICE, this is the best I could do, so will have to spend ages manually fixing bits together at some time in the future.

Presaddfed submitted by pab on 25th Sep 2012. Presaddfed, September 2012 Timber support which features in most photos on Portal has now been removed, so the more southerly chamber looks even better. Delightful location - the walk over the field feels more like a procession, with the chambers looking more impressive all the time.

St Cybi's Well

St Cybi's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 11th Dec 2004. St Cybi was a 6th century Cornishman who is said to have created this spring by striking a rock with his staff. Climb the stone stile in the corner of the graveyard of the Parish Church in Langybi and then follow the fence line that runs at right angles to the graveyard wall. Once through the gorse at the far side of the field, a bridge will take you over a stream to the substantial ruins of St Cybi’s Wellhouse and the custodian’s house next to it. The well basin is in the centre of t...

St Seiriol's Well

St Seiriol's Well submitted by AngieLake on 5th Aug 2004. According to the invaluable CADW (Welsh Historical Monuments) booklet, 'Anglesey - A Guide to Ancient Monuments on the Isle of Anglesey' : "Traditionally, this well was thought to be associated with the early native Welsh monastic settlement at Penmon. Indeed, the well and adjacent 'cell', or chamber, were reputedly linked with St Seriol himself. What survives today, however, is probably very much later. The well is one of many examples in Wales linked with a local saint. Such wells were t...
