Cahokia - Museum submitted by bat400 on 4th Aug 2007. Cahokia - Visitor's Center and Museum, Illinois. When the center was built the post holes and building footprints of multiple small houses were revealed and completely excavated. The size and orientation of these homes has been recorded in a painted image on the paved areas around the building. Emerald Mound, Illinois submitted by bat400 on 18th Oct 2007. Emerald Mound was built on the top of a local rise above Silver Creek. A village surrounded this central mound, but very little of any other structures remain.
The mound itself is owned by the State of Illinois, but it is surrounded by privately owned farm land.

Northeast of the "Great Circle" portion of the Newark complex there are earthen walls (each about 3 feet high and 6 feet wide) that lead toward the Wright Earthwork. This is one of them, looking toward the outside of the "Great Circle" itself.

What you cannot tell from satellite views and most photos of the site is that there would have been a clear view of the effigy from higher ground immediately to the west of the mound. In this photo you can just make out the irregular lines of the mound through the recently planted trees in the upscale neighborhood that surrounds the mound.
