Log Text: An amazing museum and well worth the price. I do note that due to funding reductions some galleries have been closed, I believe on a rotating basis. On the day of my visit, much of the ceramics collections, the Vase and Minor Objects Collection, were not accessible.

Log Text: In addition to the Cycladic Art and artifacts, the museum's collection of classical Greek art and artifacts (including fine examples of arms and armor) is diminished only by the National Archaeological Museum a mile away.

The excavated tombs are sheltered under a purpose built air conditioned pavilion, while a further unexcavated tomb still under its mound lies outside.

Tumulus of the Athenians submitted by AlexHunger on 21st Aug 2006. Tumulus for the Athenians fallen at the battle of Marathon in 490 BCE against the Persians. 7000 Greeks defeated 20,000 Persians. There was a stele commemorating the dead, but this is now in a museum.

Log Text: Lies in the center of a park-like area. Admission is charged, but its free if you have already visited the Marathon Museum and show your ticket. Less exciting, than it is inspiring.

Ramnous

Ramnous submitted by AlexHunger on 24th Aug 2006. Hillfort on the northern coast of Attica. The area has been inhabited since the neolithic, but the Athenians guarisoned the place after the persian invasion in order to watch the straight towards Euboa. There are several necropolises and two temples nearby.

Parthenon submitted by AlexHunger on 25th Aug 2006. Classic 5th Cenury BCE Temple to Athena. At the moment, the temple is being restored, which may take until 2025. Archeologists are replacing the rusted iron pins used to secure the temple in the 19th century with non coroding Titanium ones, and various damaged pieces of marble are receiving replacement bits and pieces cut from the same quarry. The authorities are however not bringing the parthenon back to how it was before the turkish gun powder magazine explosion as too many pieces are missin...
