Wright-Holder Works

Wright-Holder Works submitted by bat400 on 6th Jan 2008. Wright Holder works. Of several earthen enclosures, only the large rectangular one may be glimpsed from the public road. Given the lay of the land and the site being under the plow, it is difficult to make out the earthen wall from ground level. The property is private, with no public parking area. Windover (Florida) submitted by bat400_photo on 9th Jan 2014. "This is a peat bog accidentally discovered in 1982 which preserved the burials of native americans 7,000 to 8,000 years ago. It is located in dense woods and hard to find ... but locals who are proud of the site will help you find it." 12 March 2012, 17:24:15 Author: Roy Klotz MD This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license.

Log Text: I drove passed this site multiple times without knowing it (while hunting for it!) Despite the pond's location directly along a paved road through a housing estate, there is no place to stop and look at the pond without walking through a private home's back garden or "bushwacking" through Florida underbrush. As described in the site listing, you are better off visiting the Brevard County History and Science Museum and asking them if any visits to the site are planned.

Log Text: Large and steady rainfall this spring has flooded two of the three excavation areas normally open to the public. The largest excavation (over what was a long loaf shaped burial mound covering a village surface) is still open, as it the small visitor center.
The site admission fee has been reduced during this period. The friendly staff are still ready to answer your questions.
During the last week of April the only route into the village of Wickliffe is Kentucky State Road 60. The other major routes were either flooded or blocked by a mudslide.

Vichama

Vichama submitted by bat400 on 21st Mar 2019. Site in Lima Region, Peru. La Hornacinas (The Niches), the principal building in sector A. A relief thought to be a frog and lightning, possibly symbolizing rebirth. This is the highest relief art in the building complex and part of the penultimate building phases. Photo by bat400, Sept 2018.

Log Text: Vichama differs from Caral and Banduria by the pictorial reliefs that have been found on several walls of elite residencies and ceremonial sites. The largest of these are easily seen at the primary site which included both a a large circular courtyard with ceremonial building over looking it. There are two walls depicting figures. Many of these appear to be starving figures, while others may be either be in the midst of some sort of exclamation or dance. The starving figures point to sunken abdomens or skeletal remains, but ts difficult to be certain if the other figures depict mournful grief or happy rejoicing.
In 2018 another, smaller wall of even more abstract figures, including snakes and faces was found. This wall has not been stabilized and was covered when we visited.

Log Text: Maps still show the major buildings, tombs, and sanctuaries, but almost all of the ancient city of Aigai is currently closed to visitors. However, you can still hike up to see the fenced off (but visible) theater from the big parking lot on the east side of the modern village of Vergina. From here you have a great view to the north over what was the agora, a portion of the city's eastern wall, and the cemetery complexes.
To the east you can see the modern village of Palatitsia ("palace,") where the 16th century church of St. Demetrius can be seen with ancient column drums making up part of the walls. http://www.panoramio.com/photo/23715229

The Tusayan ruins at the Grand Canyon National Park show two separate circular ruins that may have been ceremonial rooms, or Kivas. The smaller one appeared to have burned, was made into some other sort of space. This is the foundation of the larger Kiva, seemingly built later that the first. There was a firepit in the center of the room and an airshaft (seen in the rear wall.) This is a common feature of both historic Kivas, and simi...
