Yonder Bognie Warden

Yonder Bognie Warden submitted by cosmic on 22nd Mar 2004. Yonder_Bognie at NJ601458 in Aberdeenshire is rated by Burl as a Class 3 Circle but I felt it deserves more due to its impressive recumbent. The recumbent at about nine feet long by five feet high is almost flat on top and is one of the most impressive I've seen. The circle especially to the west side seems to have some rogue stones dumped into it - there is a profusion of stones around the perimeter of the neighbouring fields! The owner lives at Kirkland Farm and seemed happy for me to vi...

Chun Quoit

Chun Quoit submitted by sem on 16th Jun 2005. The capstone and the horizon. There is a theory that dolmens (or quoits as they are known in Cornwall) were not totally covered in earth but the capstones were left uncovered and were a copy of the horizon. I have manipulated the tones in this shot to show this, but no shapes have been altered.

Trevedra Common Tumuli, In the blue ellipse is the remains of a ring barrow (SW37292754) with a low circular (and very ploughed) earth bank that was 10m in diameter and 0.2m high. There are no indications of an entrance to the inside of the circle and it was concluded that the feature is a ring barrow. In the green circle is a (ploughed) barrow (SW37442728) marked on the OS map of 1906, It was noted by Dudley in 1953 as having been destroyed in 1952 when the common land was made into farmland. R...

Carn Euny Fogou

Carn Euny Fogou submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jan 2005. This shot shows the huge but low (4.5ft - 1.4m) SE-facing doorway of the Carn Euny 'Beehive Hut' underground chamber, with its own short passage leading into the fogou passage which runs SW/NE, (but snaking here with a flatter, more W/E run), just outside the doorway. It is thought that the Beehive Hut (chamber) was the first structure on this site, so that originally the eastern wall of the fogou passage would not have obstructed the view. It is possible that the sun was meant to shine down t...
