Caer Leb submitted by TimPrevett on 14th Apr 2004. Caer Leb is a rectilinear settlement enclosure, with double ditches and banks defining an area 200 feet by 160 feet. Some have interpreted it as a mediaeval homestead with moat (indeed, some of the ditches get very water logged). However, finds of a 3rd Century AD brooch, a 4th Century denarius of Postumus, and Roman pottery and quernstones date the site much earlier than mediaeval. Like the Din Lligwy Settlement, the CADW guidebook says it possibly has its origins earlier than the 3rd Century, ...

Log Text: From Spittal of Glenshee walk along the Cateran Trail, over one cattle grid, past one bothy. Just before the second cattle grid/bothy take the grass trail forking up to the left and steeply up. The grave is a mound with four stones at the top.

But a partial excavation found two chambers each with a short passage leading to a common paved stone-walled enclosure (I am reminded that at least one beehive structure used to reside in Breck Farm's stackyard). Rennibister Souterrain submitted by enkidu41 on 5th May 2004. HY 397125 Acces to the 8' x 11' hexagonal chamber to this earth-house is by a trapdoor although originally it wa a sloping passage. The walls are of drystone masonry and upright slabs, its roof of overlapping lintels supported on four heavy pillars.

The lower chamber, reached by a 19' passage, is about 12' long x 5' wide x 5' high, and is divided into 4 cells by upright slabs.
